Kylian Mbappe has already etched his name into the history books by lifting the 2018 World Cup title at just 19, making him the fourth-youngest player to achieve this feat. He currently stands as the third-highest top goal-scorer for the French national team.
In his second successive World Cup final, the Frenchman’s solo efforts weren’t enough to outclass Messi-led Argentina in Qatar. Chelsea star Enzo Fernandes recently shed light on what led his fellow compatriot Christian Romero to celebrate right in front of Mbappe in the WC Final.
Why did Cristian Romero celebrate in front of Kylian Mbappe?
Argentina and France clashed again at Lusail Stadium after their last Round of 16 meeting in the previous World Cup in Russia. However, on this occasion, the stakes were high in the finale showdown.
In a fiercely contested encounter, the defending world champions France failed to defend their title on penalties after an exhilarating 3-3 draw. Despite Kylian Mbappe bagging a hat-trick in extra time, stretching the game into penalties, the mighty world champions fell to Lionel Messi and Co.
La Albiceleste’s collective efforts, along with Eight-time Ballon Dor holder Lionel Messi’s brace, paved the way for his side to lift the title. In such an exhilarating clash, the players barged into each other, and Enzo Fernandes was among those involved in a heated discussion with Kylian Mbappe.
Enzo, while speaking on the incident to Tyc Sports, uncovered the reason that made Romero get involved between him and the Frenchmen.
He said, “He (Mbappe) got into it with me, I don’t know why. And well, I have a soldier who defends me. Cuti is crazy, haha. When we scored the goal, I remember he (Romero) started celebrating in his face.”
On the same matter, Spurs defender Christian Romero himself had an explanation for his action in the final. Romero believed Kylian Mbappe’s treatment towards Enzo was disrespectful, prompting his celebration in Mbappe’s face after Messi’s goal in extra time.
Enzo Fernandez talks in heated exchange with Kylian Mbappe
The Argentine international, Enzo Fernandez, became the most expensive British transfer of all time upon his move to Chelsea on a record fee of £121 million from SL Benfica earlier in January 2023. The 22-year-old midfielder has emerged as an instrumental figure for the Blues, starting in all of their Premier League games this season.
Enzo recently disclosed details about his heated argument with PSG captain Kylian Mbappe during the World Cup final.
He revealed, “I remember what he told me, things about the game. There were plays that we were celebrating during the game, and he made signs to us as if he were going to confront us aggressively. He told us that they were going to win the final.”
Eventually it was Lionel Messi-led La Albiceleste who were crowned the Champions. Enzo Fernandez was awarded the “Best Young Player” accolade at the World Cup after Argentina lifted their third World Cup title. He made a total of seven appearances, with five starts and twice coming on as a substitute in their title campaign. His outstanding performance caught the attention of Chelsea, leading them to pursue his signature.
