Fan expects to earn a fortune by selling Novak Djokovic’s racket
Moments after Novak Djokovic emerged victorious with the 2016 French Open crown by defeating Andy Murray, he threw his racket into the crowd. Abby Doherty was the lucky spectator who held on to the prized item by rising above a crowd of grabbing hands.
Now, seven years later, Abby is auctioning the racket via California-based SCP Auctions. He currently has a bid of $20k, but experts opine the value could rise to $100k.
“It was all in slow motion. He just flung it into the crowd. It hit my hand and it was deflected to the ground. I sprinted to it and put my foot on the racquet and grabbed the handle,” Doherty reminisced on the special day.
“I wanted to get him to sign it, but I was unable to get his attention,” he added.
Abby was among the many spectators at the Stade Roland Garros, eagerly awaiting the final match between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. It was a significant day, as the victor would secure their 12th grand slam title.

By the time the final arrived on 5 June 2016, Novak Djokovic knew he had one more chance to secure an elusive crown. Although he had earned titles at the other three grand slams, he had yet to win a final at Roland Garros, with a record of 0-3.
After the match ended, Novak Djokovic would take home his first French Open title and 12th grand slam title overall.
Andy Murray began steadily and looked good for a victory after securing the first set in his favor. However, as the commanding Serb had displayed for many years, his never-give-up attitude shone brightly on a sunny summer afternoon as he made an epic comeback.
Eventually, Novak Djokovic won 3–6, 6–1, 6–2, 6–4 and achieved a career grand slam and a non-calendar year Grand Slam( won a $1 million bonus from ITF for winning all 4 grand slams regardless of year).
This wouldn’t be Novak’s last French Open title, as he would win the 2021 and 2023 titles. This year’s title was his 23rd, and he would go on to become the most accomplished tennis athlete in the history of the sport by winning the US Open.
