Jamahal Hill, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, was recently arrested by the police. The former champion was embroiled in a controversy surrounding an incident in New York when the bus he was traveling got caught amidst a pro-Palestinian rally, and has now been charged on different accounts.
Hill, who won the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 283 against Glover Teixeira, had to vacate the title after an Achilles injury. In his absence, Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira fought for the vacant title at UFC 295 where Pereira won by second-round TKO.
What potential punishment does Jamahal Hill face?
Jamahal Hill was arrested earlier this week, charged with one count of misdemeanor aggravated domestic violence against his brother, James Anthony Hill Jr. Hill is accused of inflicting serious injurious on his brother.
Hill was arrested in the state of Arizona where he resides. The state has stringent laws for aggravated domestic violence. Moreover, the penalty for the offense is severe for repeat offenders. Furthermore, aggravated domestic violence is a Class Five felony in the state.
If found guilty, Hill will face up to 4 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines in addition to counseling and community service. However, this applies only to first-time offenders. Repeat offenders are to serve 7 years in prison with any lenience coming after only 4 or 8 months.
Hill is not the first UFC fighter to be accused of battery. Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, Jorge Masvidal, and Nick Diaz, among others, are the other prominent fighters who faced battery charges in court.
Manager responds to Jamahal Hill arrest
Jamahal Hill is represented by MMA Manager Brian Butler of SuckerPunch Entertainment. Interestingly, Butler was also with Hill when the bus he was traveling got caught up in the middle of a Palestinian protestor on the street. Butler on his X, formerly Twitter, account spoke about the incident involving Hill.
“The recent “click bait” headlines about @JamahalHwere based on an alleged dispute between him and his older brother.”, tweeted Butler. The media ran a narrative and used “click bait” headlines to get more viewers. The narrative does not align with the truth of the matter.
“Jamahal adamantly maintains his innocence and denies the false accusations. We will not be commenting anymore about this until the truth comes out in court.”, Butler further tweeted explaining that his client is innocent of the crimes he is accused of.
In addition to Hill, Butler also represents top MMA fighters from all the promotions. Among the prominent names, Brendan Allen, Muhammad Usman, Rose Namajunas, Carla Esparza, among others, are represented by Butler’s SuckerPunch Entertainment.
