Antoine Griezmann has been flying for Atletico Madrid ever since he returned there two years ago. The Frenchman recently had a bad couple of years, but has since turned it around to become one of the best players in La Liga currently.
Griezmann has also started this season well and is gunning to win the club their first La Liga title since 2021. It would also be his first league title ever, despite playing for two of the biggest clubs in Spain. Griezmann has already proved his quest by equaling a great record.
Antoine Griezmann equals Messi’s La Liga record
His impeccable form for Atletico Madrid has been earning praise for a long time from fans and pundits alike. And now he has earned an award for his recent performances. La Liga has awarded him their Player of the Month award for the month of November. The award is given monthly to the player who is the most influential that month as per fan votes, and has been in continuity since 2013.
This is the Frenchman’s eighth overall Player of the Month award since it’s inception. This means that he now has the most POTM awards in the history of the league, jointly held by former teammate and Barcelona great Lionel Messi.
Griezmann scored two goals and provided an assist as Atletico leapfrogged his former club, Barcelona, in the league table. The club won two important victories that helped them reach this milestone, with the striker being a major part of it. The 32-year-old scored a goal and gave an assist in the 3-1 comeback victory against Villareal. He then scored a brilliant headed goal against Mallorca to secure a 1-0 victory.
Why did Antoine Griezmann return to Atletico?
Antoine Griezmann had broken Atleti fans’ hearts when he decided to leave the club for rivals Barcelona in 2019. But he did not have a good time there, struggling to adapt to the team. He only scored 35 goals for them and won the Copa del Rey trophy for them.
With Barcelona facing a huge financial crisis that saw even Lionel Messi being forcibly evicted, Griezmann also had to leave in 2021 due to his high wages. He returned to Atletico on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for ā¬40 million. Later, the two clubs negotiated a ā¬20 million price. Since then, Griezmann has once again returned to his previous spectacular form.
Recently, there were rumors of his leaving the club, but the Frenchman made it clear it was not happening.
Atletico are currently third in the La Liga standings with 31 points, seven points behind league leader Girona. Diego Simeone’s men have two less games too, which means they can genuinely fight for first place. Not only that, but the team seems to be playing really good football at the moment. If Griezmann continues to perform like this, then Atletico could soon fight for another title.
Their next test will be against Barcelona itself on Monday, as Antoine Griezmann once again returns to the grounds of his former club.
