Conor McGregor, known for his controversial remarks, has recently become entangled in political unrest in the Republic of Ireland. His social media tweets following the death of a teacher and the stabbing of children drew dissent from the government.
McGregor’s last fight was at UFC 264, where he suffered a leg break against Dustin Poirier. Although his return is eagerly anticipated, no official announcement has been made. Rumors suggest a potential return at UFC 300, but former UFC fighter Ben Askren has something to say about that.
Ben Askren asserts Conor McGregor will skip UFC 300
Ben Askren maintained an undefeated record in MMA before joining the UFC. The accomplished wrestler held welterweight titles at Bellator MMA and One Championship but experienced a 1-2 run in the UFC. Following a controversial debut win against Robbie Lawler, he suffered a knockout by Jorge Masvidal in under 5 seconds, still the fastest KO in UFC history.
His final bout resulted in a loss to Demian Maia in the main event of UFC Singapore 2019. Askren’s move to the UFC was part of a trade that sent Demetrious Johnson to One Championship, where he currently holds the Flyweight championship. Askren was speaking in an exclusive interview with From The Stands when he provided his prediction for UFC 300.
Askren does not think Conor McGregor will be headlining the event against Michael Chandler. “I think that’s one route you could go: Pereira vs. Adesanya. I think people would be into that,” said Askren regarding his prediction of who will headline UFC 300. Alex Pereira, after winning the light heavyweight title against Jiri Prochazka at UFC 295, called out Israel Adesanya.
Dana White was not in for the idea of Adesanya getting a title fight after a loss. White and the UFC are keen on making Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill. However, that fight is at present in jeopardy as Hill was recently arrested on a domestic violence charge filed by his brother. No information is available on the exact details of the arrest but Hill maintained his innocence and briefly talked about it on his YouTube podcast.
Police investigating McGregor over riot tweets
Conor McGregor is at present very active on social media regarding the political situation of the Republic of Ireland. McGregor recently tweeted, “Ireland, we are at war,” in response to a controversial voting law in Ireland that allows non-citizens to vote. Moreover, he condemned the death of a teacher and the stabbing of children that caused riots in Ireland.
McGregor is a fervent critic of the government led by Leo Varadkar, particularly regarding what he perceives as lenient immigrant laws. His ‘war’ tweet has been exploited by far-right extremists as a call for rioting. Currently, the police are investigating whether ‘The Notorious’ had any involvement in the violence that ensued.
Mystic Mac did not support the riots but tweeted that he understood why the riots happened but did not feel that it was the right thing to do. McGregor was recently compared to Donald Trump by a former White House staff. Moreover, there is an overwhelming sentiment in Ireland that someone like McGregor should be involved more in the political sphere.
