Giants HC Brian Daboll selects Tommy DeVito starting QB in Packers clash despite Tyrod Taylor IR return

Since the start of the season, the New York Giants have been struggling to cope with their quarterback issues following Daniel Jones’s neck issues, which intensified as the starter fell prey to a season-ending ACL injury. Meanwhile, Tommy DeVito and Tyrod Taylor both got the chance to prove their worth as backup starters in the absence of Jones.

As the Giants are gearing up for their Week 14 game, they find themselves in a quarterback quandary with DeVito and Taylor. With the Jordan Love-led Green Bay Packers on the horizon, the Giants’ head coach has unveiled the quarterback who will lead the charge in Week 14.

Brian Daboll selects Tommy DeVito as starting QB vs Packers

With the strategic move announced by Giants head coach Brian Daboll, quarterback Tommy DeVito is set to take the helm against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. The decision to start Tommy DeVito over Tyrod Taylor stems from careful consideration, acknowledging DeVito’s contributions during the team’s modest two-game winning streak.

DeVito’s ascension to the starting role began during a challenging period for the Giants, marked by Daniel Jones’ absence due to a neck injury. Taylor initially stepped in and robbed a win for the Giants by setting a record. Yet he faced an untimely setback, suffering four broken ribs during an October 29 loss to the New York Jets.

It was during that fateful game that DeVito, recently trolled by the football fans for staying with his parents, assumed the quarterback position, a role he has held ever since Jones endured a torn ACL the following week against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Daboll, in a meeting with the reporters, expressed his decision, emphasizing DeVito’s deserving claim to the starting position.

“I just thought Tommy earned it. Went back, watched all the tape, thought he played two good games. Obviously, there are things we can all work on. Though he earned the right to play,” stated Daboll, according to Bleacher Report.

The Giants’ quarterback saga had garnered speculation, especially with Taylor’s return from injured reserve on Monday with a 21-day window.

Winning games over the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots have contributed to the Giants’ recent 4-8 record, which represents a statistical improvement under DeVito’s leadership. However, the team’s recent surge in success has unfortunately resulted in Taylor losing his starting position primarily due to injury.

Taylor, a seasoned quarterback with 13 NFL seasons under his belt, handled the situation with utmost professionalism and understanding. His disappointment was palpable as he expressed his frustration about not starting against the Packers.

By carefully choosing his words, Taylor reiterated that the decision was not personal, acknowledging Coach Daboll’s prerogative to make the right choices for the team.

In Taylor’s own words, “Coach [Daboll] feels that this is the right decision for the team, and I support the decisions that our coaches make, that our personnel [staff], people who make decisions on personnel, I trust that day in and day out. I’m just on the other end of it. I mean, it’s tough. Obviously, as a competitor not being able to go out there once healthy – I mean, it hurts, but at the same time, like I said it’s the nature of the business.”

Despite the setback, Taylor’s performance on the field has been commendable. Completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 579 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in seven games, he has showcased his veteran prowess.
