Colby Covington, the former interim welterweight champion, will make his third attempt to claim the title at UFC 296. Additionally, the event will feature an anticipated welterweight bout between Vicente Luque and Ian Machado Garry, the undefeated prospect from the Republic of Ireland.
Ian Garry is the main subject of controversy concerning his marriage to Layla Anna-Lee, who is significantly older than her. Garry has been critical of Colby Covington numerous times and the press conference of UFC 296 is expected to provide fireworks due to the animosity.
Colby Covington slams Ian Garry for turning off IG comments
Ian Garry and his wife faced social media attacks from fighters and fans in the MMA community after allegations concerning his marriage. Sean Strickland was at the forefront of these attacks, prompting Garry to threaten the middleweight champion with a lawsuit. Now, in his interview with Mirror Fighting, Colby Covington provides his take on the matter.
“All I say about Ian is, ‘Step in shoes Jr., you better wipe that shit off.’ So, you know, I’ve had death threats, bombings, like, people wanted to kill me after Brazil. I never turned off my social media. I never turned off my comments,” said Covington.
“Look at that little Ian Gary, he’s turning off his comments like a little fuckin sensitive soy boy. So, you know, he ain’t tough,” Covington further said about Garry who has now turned off the comments section of his social media.
“He ain’t the biggest and baddest fuckin fighter in this division. The guy’s a fuckin joke. He’s a little fuckin kid. So, I don’t really have anything to say to him,” Covington patronized Garry.
In addition to Garry, Paddy Pimblett, who is facing Tony Ferguson will also be present at the UFC 296 press conference. Pimblett is yet another fighter who has criticized Covington in the past. Ferguson is on a 6 fight losing streak and will be facing Pimblett, who is returning from injury after the controversial win against Jared Gordon at UFC 282.
What is Colby Covington’s next fight date?
Colby Covington is headlining the final PPV of 2024 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas against Leon Edwards. Covington, who was the backup fighter when Edwards defended the title against Kamaru Usman, last fought Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 in March of 2022.
Edwards won the title at UFC 278 from Kamaru Usman with a come-from-behind head kick knockout victory in the final moments of the fight. Usman was leading 3-1 on all the judge’s scorecards when Edwards’ kick landed in the head that is now etched in the annals of UFC history.
“You’ll see at the press conference, but my business and my attention are focused towards Leon Scott, and that’s all I care about right now,” said Covington in a recent interview. He has his sights set on winning the welterweight title in the presence of Donald Trump who is rumored to be at the event in Las Vegas.
Covington has plans to fight at UFC 300 if victorious at UFC 296 against Edwards. On the other hand, Leon Edwards also has a similar plan of fighting at UFC 300. Edwards plans to fight the winner of the UFC 297 main event between Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis. Covington had earlier hinted his interest in fighting Islam Makhachev which is something the lightweight champion also has in mind.
