Lewis Hamilton showcased extreme sportsmanship during his address at the FIA Prize Giving Gala, as he generously praised his rival, Max Verstappen. Despite finishing third in the championship, the Briton’s recognition of Verstappen’s outstanding performance took center stage.
The Formula 1 awards, a culmination of the gala in Baku on Friday, featured the presentation of prizes to the top three drivers. Hamilton, graciously accepting the third placed trophy and took the opportunity to extend a respectful nod to his fellow competitors.
Hamilton’s acknowledgement of the formidable competition and his praise for Max Verstappen underscored not only the spirit of healthy competition but also the mutual respect that defines the world of Formula 1. In his speech, Hamilton’s words resonated with sportsmanship, reflecting the essence of the prestigious event.
He said, “Good evening, everyone. I just want to wish everyone a big congratulations on this year.”
“For everyone, it has been a very, very long season,, and we are we are very much looking forward to the winter break. We’re working very, very hard on making sure we come back strong next year.”
Furthermore, he proceeded to say, “I must say a big congratulations to Red Bull, Verstappen, and Checo; they’ve done an incredible job this year. Max Verstappen was faultless. Max and all of his team really raised the bar, and we have a lot of work to do to close that gap, but I truly do believe that we can close that gap.”
Lewis Hamilton criticizes FIA at their own event
Although the British driver was hugely satisfied by his success, he also expressed his disappointment and anger, pointing to the allegations Toto Wolff and his wife Susie had to face from the FIA.
Hamilton was highly critical of the entire fiasco surrounding the Mercedes team principal and his wife.
He said, “It has been a challenging week. It’s really disappointing to see that the governing body of our sport has sought to question the integrity of one of the most incredible female leaders we’ve ever had in our sport.”
“With Susie Wolff, without questioning, without any evidence. And then just say sorry at the end. That’s just unacceptable.”
