Michael “Venom” Page, widely known as MVP, enjoyed a stellar career in Bellator MMA with an impressive record of 16-2. His only two losses were against elite fighters: interim champion Logan Storley and undisputed champion Douglas Lima.
Following his victory over Goiti Yamauchi at Bellator 292, Page became a promotional free agent. Notably, Page was pictured with UFC CEO Dana White at the weigh-ins of UFC 294. However, his recent appearance on the rival promotion has cast doubt on a potential signing with the UFC.
Michael Page reportedly to sign with PFL
The PFL Europe 4 recently concluded with Jakob Nedoh, Jakub Kaszuba, Khurshed Kakhorov, and Dakota Ditcheva winning the nontitle light heavyweight, lightweight, bantamweight, and women’s flyweight tournaments respectively. However, what made news was the face-off between two fighters who did not compete at the event.
French superstar Cedric Doumbe and promotional free agent Michael Page faced off inside the PFL cage, sparking excitement among MMA fans. Page, previously linked to a potential UFC signing, made waves with this move. Notably, Bellator MMA, Page’s former promotion, was absorbed by the PFL as part of a merger. While Doumbe was signed by the UFC, he was later released by the promotion.
The former Glory Kickboxing champion made his PFL debut in electrifying fashion with a quick KO over Jordan Zebo at PFL Europe 3. Like Francis Ngannou, Doumbe is of French-Cameroonian descent. Ngannou had a high-profile split with the UFC before signing with the PFL.
With the acquisition of Bellator MMA, the PFL now has a big roster second only to that of the UFC. However, Dana White considers the PFL ‘a shitty promotion’. It remains to be seen whether that is enough for Michael Page to sign with the promotion instead of the UFC, the premier MMA promotion in the world.
MMA fans react to Michael Page’s potential UFC snub
MMA fans are dumbstruck by the appearance of Michael Page at a PFL event and the subsequent face-off with PFL’s Cedric Doumbe. “I hope he says what the UFC offer was, it’s not like he’s gonna go there later, he’s already 36,” one fan commented. The fan wanted to know whether the UFC’s offer was subpar enough for Page to reject.
“UFC stays losing rn,” commented another fan who felt that the UFC letting go of Page was a bad decision and that his signing with a rival promotion will in turn hurt the UFC. It needs to be noted that Page is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA across all promotions, particularly if it is a stand-up fight.
“Not a big deal that@ufc lost out on this deal. He’s 36 and probably only going to do another couple fights,” commented a fan siding with the UFC. The fan provided the perspective that Michael Page is 36 years old which is old for a fighter competing in the welterweight division. The UFC might have to pay huge numbers for Page for a shorter contract.
“Noooo!! @ufc @danawhite wtf happened?” commented a fan, tagging the UFC and Dana White. The fan sought answers regarding what occurred that prevented the signing of an elite competitor like Michael “Venom” Page.
