UFC champ Leon Edwards finally breaks silence on rumored KO blow to Ian Machado Garry at Team Renegade’s gym

Leon Edwards, the UFC welterweight champion, was once teammates with undefeated welterweight from Northern Ireland, Ian Machado Garry. Garry was recently ousted from Team Renegade BJJ & MMA, Edwards’s home gym in Birmingham, England.

Incidentally, Edwards and Garry will both be at UFC 296 where Edwards will be defending his welterweight title against Colby Covington and Garry will be facing his former training partner at Kill Cliff MMA in Florida, Vicente Luque.

Leon Edwards talks on KO punch to Ian Machado Garry

Leon Edwards was recently interviewed by Damon Martin of MMA Fighting regarding his welterweight title fight at UFC 296. During the interview, Edwards was asked about his training sessions with Ian Garry, a fellow UFC welterweight. UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett in a recent interview already said that Edwards knocked out Garry during sparring at Renegade MMA.

However, that was not the case as Edwards explained about it to Martin after the journalist inquired about it. “I didn’t knock him out clean. He got a little taste, you know, got a little taste for it.” Edwards replied referencing that Garry got hit with a similar head kick that knocked Usman out at UFC 278.

Leon Edwards was not the only fighter to hurt Garry in sparring. Brendan Allen, after his victory over Paul Craig, in an interview talked about Garry being knocked out by a fellow UFC fighter at Kill Cliff MMA.

However, he refused to name the person who did it. Garry’s opponent Vicente Luque also said about a fighter knocking out Garry in sparring. Fans speculate that it was Shavkat Rakhmonov who did the job.

Was Ian Garry kicked out of Team Renegade’s gym?

Ian Garry recently was the subject of controversy due to his marriage with Layla Anna-Lee. As a result he has now turned off his Instagram comments which invited the ire of Colby Covington.

However, even before the marriage controversy, Garry was in the news for being kicked out by Leon Edwards’s head coach, David Lovell from Renegade MMA. Garry attributed the action to Edwards and his coach being insecure about the presence of a potential opponent in the future. Edwards talked about this in his interview with Damon Martin.

“He didn’t fit into the gym, you know. This is like the third gym now he has been kicked out of. You know, it is what it is,” said Edwards citing the nomadic nature of Ian Garry who at present is having his training camp at Chute Box Academy in Brazil.

“He’s just a different kind of guy. It’s hard to blend with, you know. Everywhere it goes, the camera is there; everywhere it goes, his wife is there, his kids are there. It’s like there’s a lot going on,” Edwards further added.

Edwards clarified that Garry did not blend in with the culture of the gym. Moreover, Garry’s decision to bring his family and cameras into the gym was not well reciprocated by other fighters in the gym. Nevertheless, Garry is very close with Conor McGregor with whom he sparred recently, and only had great things to say about him.
