The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes headed to their Week 14 games with an aim for a big win, especially after a Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. However, the defending champions failed to prove their charm on the field and embraced a disappointing 17-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Chiefs now have a two-game losing streak, albeit they are still sitting atop the AFC West with an 8-5 mark. The three-point loss against the Bills didn’t make headline for an underdog like Bills smashing the defending champion, instead, the game garnered attention for witnessing an angry version of Patrick Mahomes, who is usually renowned for his composure on the field.
Mahomes reflects on emotional outburst
The Week 14 match wasn’t just a battle of plays but a defining moment of controversy that left Chiefs fans and players stunned. As the clock wound down, anticipation soared when wide receiver Kadarius Toney seemed to secure a game-winning touchdown after an extraordinary lateral pass from tight end Travis Kelce.
However, officials flagged the receiver for lining up offside, nullifying the potentially match-winning play and ultimately, dashing the Chiefs’ hopes of a late lead.
Cameras caught Patrick Mahomes in a fit of rage, slamming his helmet and engaging in a heated confrontation with officials, earning him a series of trolls from the NFL community. He was seemingly yelling at the refs, “Offensive offsides? What is that? That’s f—king terrible, man!”
The QB’s frustration spilled over, an outburst that he later admitted regretting, recognizing the need to better manage his emotions, both on and off the field. During a radio appearance on 610 Sports KC on Monday, the veteran acknowledged his emotional response, expressing remorse for his behavior.
“Obviously, you don’t want to react that way. I care, man. I love this game. I love my teammates. I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win. Obviously can’t do that. Can’t be that way toward the officials, or really anybody in life. I regret acting like that”, he said per NESN.
The controversy didn’t just end with the call, instead, the signal-caller’s emotional reaction extended to post-game interactions. He expressed his frustration even while shaking hands with Bills quarterback Josh Allen, saying, “Wildest f—— call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides in that moment, man. F—— terrible.”
The 28-year-old star later reflected on his behavior, saying his emotional state wasn’t an excuse for any disrespect shown to Allen or anyone else. He acknowledged the importance of setting a positive example, especially for younger fans watching the game.
“I regret the way I acted toward Josh (Allen) after the game. He had nothing to do with it. I was still hot and emotional. You can’t do that, man. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. I was more upset about that than the other sideline.”
With the dust settling from this contentious game, the Chiefs now aim to regroup as they gear up to face the Patriots in their upcoming matchup.
Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes express outrage over calls in Chiefs vs Bills
Chiefs Week 14 loss to the Bills was marked by sharp criticism from both Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid directed towards the officiating crew.
Pat expressed frustration both for himself and the sport, while shedding light on the impact officiating decisions can have on the game’s outcome. He emphasized the desire for games to be determined by players on the field rather than officiating errors, saying it is “tough to swallow.”
“I mean it’s obviously tough to swallow, not only for me but just for football in general; to take away greatness like that for a guy like Travis (Kelce) to make a play like that, and who knows if we win. I know as fans you want to see the guys on the field decide the game…I mean they’re human, they make mistakes but it’s every week we’re talking about something and all I can do is go out there and give everything I have and I’m proud of the guys…another great football game that just ended like that it’s just tough — tough to swallow.”
Reid echoed his QB’s sentiments by expressing surprise at the lack of warning before such a game-changing call. He discussed the unusual nature of the situation and said it was an “embarrassing” thing in the context of professional football, per SI.com.
“Very disappointed that it ended the way it did. Normally I’ll get — I never use any of this as excuses, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game. (It’s) a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place.”
The NFL, renowned for its scrutiny of comments questioning referee integrity, reportedly initiated an investigation following Mahomes and Reid’s statements. Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported that while reviewing these comments is part of the investigation, the league may focus on on-field behavior and comments directed at officials during the game, especially when captured by cameras.
The league’s stern take on criticizing officiating decisions has been unequivocal, considering it a breach of conduct. Potential consequences for the Chiefs QB and HC remain uncertain. The severity of their actions, whether deemed as questioning referee integrity or showcasing disrespect towards officials during the game, will be likely to have any ensuing disciplinary measures.
