“I hated tennis when I was young”: Nick Kyrgios recalls childhood struggles with his mother dragging him to tennis court

Last year, Nick Kyrgios was famous for getting himself into drama and chaos, but this season, many believe that the Aussie’s wildness has somehow reached a new level. At the beginning of the year, he was recovering from an arthroscopic surgery and another tragedy struck with a scary house burglary, during which the tennis star’s mother was held at gunpoint.

The incident led to further injuries and longer recoveries and has halted his mission to compete in any tournament this year. With no hopes for a comeback at the January Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios reflects on his childhood trauma.

Nick Kyrgios’ mother once dragged him to tennis court

Seven-time ATP winner Nick Kyrgios shared some of his earliest childhood memories in a recent interview, recalling how his mother dragged him to tennis and encouraged him to take up the sport despite his initial reluctance. The Australian tennis star spoke on the podcast ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty,’ and revealed that he was an overweight child.

He added that his mother forced him to learn the sport. “Well, I hated tennis when I was young. So, you know, I was very chubby, overweight as a kid. And my mom, she was like, okay, we’ve got to get you doing some sport or be active. So she dragged me down to the local tennis courts. And I remember I was crying all day, hated it. Didn’t want to be there anyway,” he said.

Kyrgios also spoke about his humble beginnings and financial struggles, as he stated: “They sacrificed; you know, my dad and my mom had nothing growing up. And I guess they saw me as the person in the family to eventually try and make it and help them out and help the family out.”

Recently, Nick Kyrgios, who signed up for Onlyfans few days ago, took to the platform to announce his withdrawal from the 2024 Australian Open. This is the second consecutive time that the Aussie will miss his home major. Kyrgios pulled out of the 2023 Australian Open on the opening day due to a knee injury. He underwent arthroscopic surgery and focused on his rehab before returning to action.

Nick Kyrgios claims media misbranded him

During the interview on the podcast ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty,’ Nick Kyrgios also revealed that the media has misbranded him and often called him the bad boy of tennis for his character. He added that he is cool guy, generous and amazing personality but people keep on drawing conclusion from the outside.

“It has been hard,” Kyrgios speaking about being labeled ugly names. “That’s what the media has done – they have misbranded me, like as if I’m crazy or a bad boy. My family and closets people know that I’m quite generous and caring, intellectually switched on and like having deep conversation.

“I try my best to make other people feel comfortable. When I see a kids that is a bit insecure, i see myself at a younger age and I love that. I go up to them and make them believe in themselves – if I can do it they can also,” He added.

However, with no date of return certain for the Aussie, he has been spending the last couple of months in America and he also added that he prefers the States to his native land because he feels more respected here.
