Granada and Athletic Club pay tribute fan who died in the crowd as LaLiga match resumes a day after tragic loss

The La Liga match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao on Sunday was suspended following the death of a fan inside the stadium. Although the game had commenced as scheduled, it was halted early in the first half. Local media later confirmed that a 64-year-old Granada supporter had passed away after experiencing a cardiac arrest.

LaLiga then announced that the suspended match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao will resume on Monday from the 17th minute. Athletic currently leads 1-0, courtesy of an early goal from Iñaki Williams.

“Granada vs. Athletic Bilbao was suspended following the tragic death of a fan at the Estadio Nuevo los Cármenes,” the league said. “Our condolences go out to their family and friends, as well as to all Granada fans,” they further added.

“At the request of LaLiga, the RFEF competition judge has ruled that the fixture will resume on December 11 at 9 p.m. The match will restart from the 17th minute.”

On Monday, a minute’s silence was observed before the resumption of the game, which concluded with a 1-1 draw. A shirt was placed on the supporter’s seat in the stands, and captains Victor Diaz of Granada and Iker Muniain of Athletic Bilbao laid flowers as a gesture of paying their respects.

Inaki Williams had alread slotted one in, in the 6th minute for Athletic in their Sunday encounter. Granada rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in a La Liga match that resumed on Monday, a day after a fan passed away in the stands.

This draw did not do much to help their situation as Grenada still sits at 19th on the La Liga table. However Athletic Club has now taken the 5th spot on the table. They tally in points with Real Sociedad but Athletic lead with points.
