Leon Edwards was the hometown favorite in his previous fight against Kamaru Usman in London, England. However, in his upcoming bout against Colby Covington, Edwards will not enjoy the same advantage as Covington will be there, supported by the former President of the USA, Donald Trump.
Edwards had words for Covington’s association with the former President at the pre-fight media day. Covington, a diehard fan of the former US President, has incorporated his support for Trump into his persona.
Leon Edwards mocks Colby Covington for his weird love towards Donald Trump
Leon Edwards did not mince words when he talked about Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington and his admiration for Donald Trump. Covington, who visited Trump’s residence at the Mar-a-Lago, received good wishes of the former President, who promised that he would walk out to the event along with UFC CEO, Dana White.
However, Edwards does not understand the admiration that Covington showers on Trump. “Um, yeah, he just needs to grow up and go get a girlfriend or something,” bashed Edwards, calling Covington’s admiration of Trump childish.
Edwards plans to defend the welterweight title at UFC 296 and fight for a second title in the middleweight division at UFC 300. However, Belal Muhammad blasted Edwards for the plan advocating for his rightful place as the next title challenger. Muhammad is the backup for the event and is most likely next in line for the title.
Covington shares similar aspirations of contending for the middleweight title, primarily fueled by his animosity toward Sean Strickland. He also intends to move down to lightweight and challenge Islam Makhachev for the title, aiming to become the first three-division champion in the UFC. Covington revealed these plans in a recent interview with UFC commentator and former two-division champion, Daniel Cormier.
Colby Covington’s love for Donald Trump
Colby Covington, a very vocal supporter of Donald Trump, was the first UFC champion to take the UFC belt to the White House. He took the interim welterweight title to the White House and presented it to Trump after defeating Rafael Dos Anjos to claim it.
‘Chaos’s close association with Trump has led fans to request the fighter to have Donald Trump in his walkouts. However, the UFC deemed it logistically difficult due to the presence of numerous Secret Service agents assigned to protect Trump. Nevertheless, Trump will be in attendance cageside with Dana White to watch the PPV event.
Covington’s recent attire on the media day had the photo of the indicted Donald Trump on his back. In the past, Colby Covington has shown up in the media with the book ‘Triggered’ authored by Donald Trump Jr. He frequently wears the MAGA- Make America Great Again hat popularized by the former US President.
“Trump has been to his fight before when he’s lost, so Trump can’t fight for him,” said Leon Edwards about the presence of Trump at UFC 296. Edwards is right because Covington will be under added pressure to compete in front of an arena hoping that he wins.
