Chiefs HC Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes slapped with $150k fine by NFL for breaking league rules

As the quest for this season’s Lombardi Trophy intensifies, the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, find themselves walking a challenging path. A setback against the Green Bay Packers in Week 13, followed by a frustrating loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 14, has left the KC team fighting with disappointment.

Following their Week 14 defeat, both head coach Andy Reid and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes publicly expressed their frustrations, directing criticism towards the officials. Nevertheless, as they walked back their initial comments, the NFL delivered a stern reminder that hefty fines await those who let frustration overshadow the pursuit of success.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid finned $100k

The NFL has handed $100k in fines to the Kansas City team’s head coach, citing a violation of league rules prohibiting public criticism of game officials. The penalties stem from Reid’s postgame interviews, where he openly criticized a crucial call that impacted the outcome of the game against the Buffalo Bills.

To express his disappointment, Reid pointed out the absence of the usual warning from the lead official to the head coach regarding alignment issues, including offensive offsides. In his initial remarks, Reid termed the situation “a bit embarrassing,” emphasizing the unusual circumstances surrounding the call.

“Very disappointed that it ended the way it did. Normally I’ll get — I never use any of this as excuses, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game. (It’s) a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place,” Reid stated per Fox 59.

The contentious play in question involved Mahomes connecting with tight end Travis Kelce for a significant gain. Kelce executed a legal overhand lateral to Kadarius Toney, who sprinted into the end zone for what would have been a go-ahead touchdown. However, the officials flagged offensive offsides, nullifying the score and leaving the Chiefs trailing.

Meanwhile, Reid’s perspective underwent a shift on Monday, as he acknowledged Toney’s fault in the infraction for not verifying his alignment with the officials.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes gets $50k fine

Patrick Mahomes finds himself in the midst of a $50,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during the crucial moments of last Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. The penalty stems from Mahomes’ vehement disagreement with officials over a rare offside call against wide receiver Kadarius Toney that nullified a potential game-winning touchdown.

Mahomes, visibly irate, expressed his frustration towards the referees after the pivotal call. The Chiefs quarterback didn’t hold back, directing his discontent not only at the officials but also engaging in a postgame conversation with Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Following the game, Mahomes didn’t mince words, describing the penalty as “elementary school” stuff. He lamented the impact of officiating on the game’s outcome, emphasizing the desire for players on the field to determine the result rather than contentious calls.

“It’s tough to swallow. Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game. They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something.”

The frustration exhibited by Mahomes didn’t start with his postgame comments. Prior to that, the 28-year-old slammed his helmet on the sidelines and continued to vent his frustrations towards the officials. After the NFL fans, Stephen A. Smith also blasted Pat for his unnecessary roughness on the call.

Nevertheless, with his head coach, in a moment of reflection, Mahomes also admitted regret for the outburst, acknowledging the necessity to better manage his emotions both on and off the field.
