Acquired from the Dallas Cowboys on March 12, 2022, in what now appears to be a steal for the Cleveland Browns, Amari Cooper has consistently proven his worth. Despite initial doubts surrounding his hefty $20 million salary, the wide receiver has become an instrumental asset for Cleveland.
During the Browns’ Week 16 game, the former Cowboys player not only led his team to a crucial 36-22 victory over the Houston Texans but also etched his name in the NFL history book.
Amari Cooper sets Brown’s record with 265 receiving yards
During the Browns’ Week 16 showdown, Amari Cooper’s final stat line was nothing short of extraordinary, with 11 catches, 265 yards, two touchdowns, and a 2-point conversion. Notably, his yardage output set a new club record for a single game, surpassing the previous mark held by Josh Gordon in 2013.
The Browns, fighting to control their playoff destiny, needed a standout performance, and Cooper delivered. His 265-yard spectacle not only secured the win but also propelled the team to the brink of their first playoff appearance since 2020. The significance of the victory and Cooper’s record-breaking display cannot be overstated, marking a turning point for the Browns this season.
With four 200-yard receiving games in his career, Cooper stands just one shy of the NFL record shared by legends Calvin Johnson and Lance Alworth.
What makes Cooper’s feat even more remarkable is that he achieved this milestone with three different franchises: the Las Vegas Raiders, the Cowboys, and now the Browns. Joining the exclusive company of Terrell Owens, Amari Cooper’s versatility and impact on different teams showcase his exceptional talent and adaptability.
In addition to his record-breaking day, Cooper surpassed 1,000 receiving yards this season, marking the first time a Cleveland player achieved this feat in back-to-back years, per ESPN.
After amassing 1,160 receiving yards in 2022, Amari Cooper has now tallied 1,250 yards in the current season, with two games left to play.
DeMeco Ryans takes the blame for Texans’ defeat to the Browns
Though Week 16 marked a night of celebration for Amari Cooper and the Browns, for the Texans, it was a tale of challenges and missed opportunities.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans, despite a remarkable year at the helm in Houston, shouldered the responsibility for the team’s lackluster performance. In a candid reflection on the game, Ryan stated their bad performance kicked off with him, as he thinks his coaching duty needs more prowess.
“We have to play better, and it starts with me. I have to coach better. Obviously, we were not good enough today. I have to do better. And we have to play better…It just wasn’t good enough. You try to figure out why it wasn’t good enough.”
As the Texans grappled with injuries and offensive setbacks, the absence of their offensive standout, CJ Stroud, for the second consecutive game for concussions contributed to arguably their worst offensive performance of the season. Despite Nico Collins joining the game, the Texans found themselves on the wrong side of the outcome.
The Texans struggled on both sides of the ball throughout the game. Starting quarterback Case Keenum completed 11 of 17 passes for 62 yards and two interceptions before being replaced in the fourth quarter.
Davis Mills, coming in as his replacement, injected some life into the offense, completing 15 of 32 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. However, the late surge was not enough to alter the course of the game.
As the regular season nears its conclusion, the Texans will surely face the task of regrouping and bouncing back from a challenging night on the field.
