In 2019, tennis was deemed to be a sport riddled with corruption due to the highly frequent cases of match-fixing and doping. Such activities by numerous top players had completely tarnished the reputation of tennis as it was called the ‘dirtiest sport in the world’. Following such brutal allegations led to a suspicion on every single player and match. To tackle this unfortunate image on the sport led to the formation of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
However, things are taking a rougher turn for one of the top-most WTA players due to the ITIA’s unruly actions. The Russian star, Simona Halep made her way to the top in 2017 and bagged two Grand Slam the following years. Since then, Halep had to deal with allegations about her success as all players in the spotlight do, but the ITIA took it to another level and claimed that she was involved in illegal activities in her career.

Last year after the US Open, the former world number 1 Simona Halep was allegedly found to be participating in illegal doping activities for her matches. The ITIA announced that the player was found to be indulging in such activities more than once and suspended her from playing in any tournaments. A year later, the ITIA has not given proper statements on how they are going to be proceeding with Halep’s case but the two time Grand Slam winner is still not allowed to compete.

Simona was automatically withdrawn from the US Open and has been suspended for almost a year now. She had posted several times denying the claims, explaining her situation and continuing to train for whenever she is allowed to get back. The ITIA on the other hand, seems to have done nothing. The tennis community is not having it with this unfairness.

Tennis community outraged over Simona Halep’s harsh situation
This prolonged period of suspension has led to the Russian seeking support from the tennis community. Fans from around the world have also been pointing out the hypocrisy and incompetence of ITIA. The community has spoken up about how for a body that functions for the integrity and fairness of the sport, such a treatment to an athlete is truly unsettling.
