A few seasons ago, Timo Werner was regarded as one of the most clinical goal-scorers in Europe’s top five leagues, making him the most desired player on the lists of several clubs. Ultimately, Chelsea successfully brought him to Stamford Bridge.
Sadly, his time in London turned out to be a big disappointment; subsequently, he headed back to the Bundesliga to reunite with his former side, RB Leipzig, for a bargain £25 million fee in August of last year. And now, Timo Werner is on the radar of Manchester United for a possible return to England.
Manchester United reportedly enquire about Timo Werner
Manchester United needs a goal-scoring forward, as the club’s current season has been downhill mainly due to attacking problems. The two highest-scoring forwards, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, have only scored three goals each. They are the third-lowest-scoring side in the Premier League.
Reportedly, to address their offensive issues, Erik Ten Hag’s side is considering Timo Werner as a potential solution for a January move to bolster their squad. This strategic move aims to make a final push for at least a top-four finish in the latter half of the season.
Werner’s second spell at Leipzig has not lived up to his anticipation. The forward has been grappling with injuries and facing difficulties getting regular minutes to regain his prowess. He has only managed two goals this season, accumulating 200 minutes of play in a total of 8 league matches.
The 27-year-old has spent his last three Bundesliga fixtures as an unused substitute on the bench. Therefore, a Premier League return would be a viable option for the player as well, despite being under contract with the Bundesliga outfit until 2026.
The Red Devils have been active in the winter market, concurrently working on Jadon Sancho’s return to Borussia Dortmund. Additionally, they are plotting a substantial offer to secure the services of Crystal Palace sensation Michael Olise in the summer of 2024.
Timo Werner’s less-than-impressive Chelsea spell
In July 2020, the German international made a sensational move to Chelsea, with the Blues spending a staggering $60 million to acquire the services of Timo Werner by triggering his release clause. The fans had high hopes for the player, especially after his impressive stint with Leipzig.
Unfortunately, he failed to replicate his goal-scoring abilities at Stamford Bridge, managing only a tally of 23 goals in 89 appearances across all competitions throughout his two seasons with Chelsea. Moreover, his dry spell in the Premier League was acclaimed with the title of a flop signing.
Werner had only scored 10 goals in two league campaigns, making more than 50 appearances, prompting a move back to his home country. Nonetheless, while his performance may not have met expectations, in terms of titles and trophies, it was successful. During his tenure, Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
