Marcus Morris Sr. receives major honor at Philadelphia City hall with keys to the city

Philadelphia native and 76ers star Marcus Morris has been a constant activist and has made several contributions to charities in Philadelphia for years together and led the creation of a prominent foundation along with his family members, notably his twin brother, Marcus Morris Jr.

For his significant contributions to improving the lives of the underprivileged in his local communities, the star was highly honored at Philadelphia City Hall in the presence of his teammates, namely, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris.

Receiving the keys to a city implies an honor bestowed by a specific city on esteemed members of the city. The key has a symbolic meaning, essentially symbolizing the freedom of the key holder to enter and leave the city at will and it is considered a huge privilege to be a key holder.

While it may come as a surprise to many, because Morris Sr. joined the Sixers only in November last year, the player was honored for his off-the-court role in helping the betterment of society.

Using his platform as an NBA player, Marcus, along with twin brother Marcus Morris Jr., their mother Thomasine Morris, and European basketball player Thomas Robinson created the ‘Family Over Everything’ foundation which aims to help individuals in at-risk situations.

Starting in 2017, the foundation raised significant contributions for charities under the guidance of the Morris twins. Following his contribution to society, the elder of the twins, Marcus Morris Sr. was honored with the keys to the city in a ceremony which was attended by a few of his 76ers teammates.

Speaking on the honor, Morris said, “I represent my city everywhere I go, it means a lot to me. I would be nothing without this city.”

He added, truly appreciating the honor, “For them to be recognizing me and my family—not just me, but the last name—is surreal.”

Apart from his contributions off-the-court, Morris Sr. has been quite a significant addition to the Philadelphia 76ers roster and rotation.

Marcus Morris’ role at Sixers

Acquired in November last year, Morris Sr. was brought into the Sixers not only for his ever-present scoring off the bench but also for his ability to guide the young unit of the 76ers.

This season, the star is averaging 6.5 points per game and 2.7 rebounds in 28 games played for the team. In his most recent game for the Sixers, the star dropped 17 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. While his contributions are great, it’s his mentorship that he’s most known for. Morris Sr. has completely taken Tyrese Maxey under his wing, helping him develop his skills and also advising him on bouncing back from setbacks.

His role in elevating Maxey has been quite remarkable, and it will be a memorable experience for the young star.
