Bruno Fernandes is the new captain of Manchester United after Harry Maguire was stripped of the key position which he assumed for three years. The Englishman was made captain by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer a few months into his Manchester United career, an honor Maguire failed to live up to, as on-field blunders ruined his legacy at the club.
Bruno became the vice-captain last season but wore the armband most of the time as Harry Maguire was relegated to the bench following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez, who formed a great partnership with Raphael Varane. Fernandes now faces criticism for his on-field antics, which earned him a yellow card against Tottenham Hotspur.
Fernandes branded ‘pathetic’ amid criticism
Bruno Fernandes is known for his passion for the game which sometimes leads him to display more emotions than necessary. The Portuguese midfielder rarely gets booked for his tackles, but rather for his complaints to referees and antics on the pitch. The former Sporting CP playmaker was involved in an on-field spat with Sancho last season in a match against Aston Villa, with the Englishman spotted telling Fernandes to “stop moaning.”
Paul Scholes also gave his opinion on making Bruno a permanent captain last season. “Your captain has to be a calming influence, really. He almost has to be the one who calms characters like him down. I worry about him if Manchester United is going for a league title in March or April. I don’t think having Bruno as your captain would be ideal. I think a less emotional captain might be better,” the former United midfield maestro said.
With a new rule about players crowding match officials being introduced to the Premier League this season, a player like Fernandes could receive a lot of bookings as he did when United lost to Spurs in a 2-0 defeat last week.
