In the tumultuous 2023 NFL season, the coaching carousel spun rapidly, resulting in the departure of eight coaches as they failed to secure a winning streak. Notably, none of them garnered as much attention as Bill Belichick, as he and the New England Patriots team mutually decided to part ways after an impressive 24-season collaboration in the NFL.
Now, the head coach, who is vying to surpass Don Shula, finds himself at the center of attention for a potential move to the Atlanta Falcons. As the Falcons enter the second week of their coaching search, the coaching legend’s future becomes a focal point of speculation in the NFL circuit.
Bill Belichick reportedly met with Falcons’ owner, Arthur Blank
Recent reports by Tom Pelissero revealed that Bill Belichick had a face-to-face meeting with Falcons owner Arthur Blank to discuss the team’s head coaching position. While no deal is imminent, there is mutual interest, and ongoing conversations indicate that both parties are exploring the possibility.
The Falcons confirmed the development, making an official statement regarding Belichick’s interview. He becomes the sixth coaching candidate the team has considered since parting ways with Arthur Smith. The former Falcons’ coach led the Falcons for three seasons, culminating in three consecutive 7-10 records.
The 71-year-old recently bid farewell to the Patriots, ending a remarkable tenure. During his last press conference with the Patriots, he expressed gratitude for his time in New England, stating himself as a “forever Patriot.”
“I will always be a Patriots. I look forward to coming back here. But, at this time, we’re going to move on. I look forward to, am excited for the future.”
Nevertheless, the Patriots swiftly filled the coaching vacancy with Jerod Mayo, while the Falcons’ search for a new head coach is ongoing. Notably, reports circulated just days after Belichick’s departure from the Patriots that the Falcons had identified him as their top candidate for the vacant head coaching position.
Rob Gronkowski claims the Falcons are pursuing Bill Belichick
Already, the possibility of Belichick joining the Falcons has sparked excitement, especially among his former players. One such player is Rob Gronkowski, who expressed surprise and shock when the Patriots announced they were parting ways with Belichick.
Gronkowski believes that the storied head coach is returning with a vengeance and hinted at the Atlanta Falcons being eager to secure his services.
“He’s coming back with vengeance. And I’ve been hearing on the streets the Atlanta Falcons are coming in hot for Coach Belichick,” Gronkowski shared on Fox’s pregame show.
Atlanta has cast a wide net in its pursuit of a new head coach, interviewing several candidates, including defensive coordinators Mike Macdonald, Steve Wilks, and Ejiro Evero. Offensive minds like Brian Callahan and Ravens assistant head coach Anthony Weaver are also in the mix.
Former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan also weighed in on the coaching search, suggesting that Bill Belichick could be an excellent choice for the team, especially if they opt for a veteran leader. Belichick’s remarkable track record includes six Super Bowl victories and 17 division titles during his 24 seasons with the Patriots.
