Why is Everton facing another point deduction alongside Nottingham Forest?

It seems the Premier League is toughening it’s stance on clubs breaking financial rules, with Everton and Nottingham Forest the latest ones. Many clubs have been charged with breaking Financial Fair Play rules, with the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Chelsea all facing potential punishments.

Furthermore, Everton were also recently hit with a 10 points deductions for breaking financial rules, and it looks like it will be repeated as they are hit with another charge. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have also been charged.

Why is Everton facing another point deduction?

According to The Athletic, Everton are set to potentially face another huge point deduction. The club along with Nottingham Forest are expected to face an independent commission over the charges levied against them. The commission will investigate the charges against the clubs and find if they are guilty. Both clubs are accused of breaking the Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules.

According to the rules, a club can only lose £105 million maximum over a period of three years in the Premier League, or £35 million in a single season. Due to both clubs spending a lot of money, especially Forest, they have incurred massive losses. The Merseyside club are said to be building a new stadium, which they are expected to use to their advantage in the appeal case. Nottingham meanwhile have lost more than £35 million last season, which is why they were charged.

Having already faced a 10 points deduction, Everton could be again given a similar punishment, or a massive fine instead. Nottingham Forest will also likely face similar punishments. The Toffees are already appealing the initial punishment, and both clubs are expected to strongly fight against the allegations.

Everton, Nottingham Forest respond to the situation

Everton released a massive and strongly worded statement to the situation ,”Everton Football Club acknowledges the Premier League’s decision to refer a breach of Profit & Sustainability rules (PSR) for the assessment period ending with the 2022/23 season to an independent Premier League commission.”

They also pointed that they are already facing a points deduction for the previous three year fiscal period when they incurred the losses. They have mentioned the appeal case for that, and for the Premier League’s rule changes. The club has also pointed out the ‘deficiency’ of the league’s rules.

Nottingham Forest have also put out a statement, though they are more willing to cooperate with the authorities, “Nottingham Forest acknowledges the statement from the Premier League confirming that the club has today been charged with a breach of the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The club intends to continue to cooperate fully with the Premier League on this matter and are confident of a speedy and fair resolution.”

Both clubs are already battling relegation, so cannot afford any points deduction. Everton and Forest are 17th and 15th respectively, with 17 and 20 points. A points deduction will surely derail their chances of surviving the season even more.
