Giovanni Reyna promised a lot of potential when he joined Borussia Dortmund’s first team in 2020. The American winger had joined the club’s youth system from New York City FC a year prior and made his debut for the Black and Yellow in January 2020. Sadly, four years later, Reyna is still unable to nail down a starting position in a Dortmund jersey.
His recent role on the club’s bench has been a frustrating one for the player, who has now made the decision to leave the club, whether on an initial loan deal or permanently.

It’s never easy when a young player is condemned to the bench for an extended period of time, and that’s what Giovanni Reyna is currently going through at Borussia Dortmund. Despite scoring seven league goals and providing four more assists in Dortmund’s title charge last season, his role has quickly changed at the club, and he has since been forced to make two starts in all competitions this season.
According to Sebastian Kehl, Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director, Reyna hasn’t done anything to improve his situation at the club.
“Gio had a difficult time and was often injured,” Kehl said. “It’s not easy because of the line-up we have in the center. I can understand that he may be dissatisfied at the moment, but it’s also important for him to step on the gas,” he concluded.
Jadon Sancho’s return to the club on an initial loan deal must have convinced Giovanni Reyna he’s better off elsewhere. The returning winger assisted on his second debut for the club, which may further limit Reyna’s playing chances at the club.
According to recent reports, the American is ‘determined’ to leave the club this January, as he’s offered to different clubs in order to secure a move away from Borussia Dortmund.

The reality of Giovanni Reyna’s situation is that any deal to move away from Borussia Dortmund right now will most likely be a loan deal, as interested clubs would like to see what the youngster could do before committing to a permanent deal.
Real Sociedad, Sevilla, and Marseille have all shown interest in signing Reyna in the January transfer window, leaving the young American with the choice to choose where he’ll play next, at least for the next six months.
Reyna’s talents are obvious. Any team that signs him will get a fast-paced, energetic attacking midfielder and winger with amazing positional discipline.
Borussia Dortmund could also lose another youngster Moukoko, with Real Madrid lurking around the young winger to add him to their growing list of a young team that will take over the world in the next few years.
