The commissioner of the NBA has given his verdict on the future of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Josh Giddey who has been in quite the trouble for some time now. Giddey has been involved in a pretty serious scandal, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl.
In November of 2023, various photos and videos featuring Giddey were posted by an anonymous account on social media that raised suspicions of him having a relationship with a minor. Since then this fiasco has become a heated topic, and the NBA commissioner has finally weighed on the situation.
Adam Silver on Josh Giddey’s alleged scandal
Adam Silver, the fifth commissioner of the NBA has recently expressed his thoughts on the Josh Giddey scandal and has also indirectly addressed the anger in the community for allowing him to play for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Silver’s statement conveyed that he could not suspend Giddey on allegations alone as there needs to be concrete proof after a criminal investigation.
“I can not think of many circumstances where we have suspended a player based on the allegation alone… and when there is a criminal investigation, we take a backseat… That is where things currently stand with him,” said Silver when asked about the case of Josh Giddey.
Silver also emphasized that the NBA takes a “backseat” when the responsible authorities get involved and that is the right course of action as every person is deemed innocent until proven guilty. Hence, suspending or punishing him without concrete proof could possibly backfire on them later.
NBA fans furious as Josh Giddey continues to play for OKC Thunder
Adam Silver may have taken a safe route and decided to do what’s best for the business but the fans are not having it. The NBA community is furious with the allegations put on Josh Giddey and many have already convicted him as a criminal in their minds after the anonymous release of the photos of him with a minor girl.
They are demanding action to be taken against Giddey and are criticizing the NBA for not doing so.
One fan expressed his displeasure with Silver’s statement and tried to point out the hypocrisy in his statements. He brought up the case of the Clippers guard Joshua Primo who was suspended despite an ongoing criminal investigation.
Another fan brought up the case of Grizzlies star Ja Morant who was also suspended for 25 games because of an action that actually was not illegal.
