The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to create a successful transition period following the retirement of NFL icon Tom Brady, and Mike Evans was projected to be an important part of the roster. Being in the final year of his contract, the wide receiver reportedly wanted a deal like the Los Angeles Rams Cooper Kupp.
However, the Bucs are struggling badly with salary cap constraints, and despite rumors of Evans signing a lucrative contract, the team seemingly has no big plan for him. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs emerged as a potential suitor for the veteran ahead of their second regular-season match.
Fans speculate Mike Evans is coming to the Chiefs
Jarrett Bailey of USA Today sparked the rumor of Mike Evans potentially coming to Patrick Mahomes’ squad by urging the franchise to sign him following a devastating performance of their veteran Kadarius Toney.
“Having him work the perimeter while (Travis) Kelce eats in the middle of the field would make a real conundrum for defensive coordinators, especially in the red zone. This is a no-brainer for both sides. The Chiefs need weapons, and the Buccaneers need draft capital- both sides should be able to get this done”, he wrote of the Bucs 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds star.
Following Bailey’s claim, NFL fans took to social media to support his idea of enrolling the big-bodied athlete on Kansas City’s roster. Meanwhile, Dov Kleiman of NFL Network reported that Tampa Bay has no plan for signing a contract extension with the 30-year-old ahead of the deadline his agent Deryk Gilmore set for Saturday, September 9.
As the Bucs are trying to move on from their vet, netizens are projecting the team to secure a potential trade to send him into Mahomes’ squad. Mike Evans has already established himself as a formidable force by exceeding 1,000 yards in Tampa during each of his nine seasons in the NFL so far, and he is also the first player in the league to start his career by doing so. Hence, his acquisition can give a big boost to the Chiefs following their unfortunate loss in the first match.
Kadarius Toney is unable to catch Patrick Mahomes passes
Kadarius went through a series of backlashes from NFL fans after dropping three perfectly thrown passes from the Chiefs’ two-time MVP. His deflection to Detroits star Brian Branch was the day’s defining play, as its interception and return for a touchdown turned the match in the Lions’ favor in the third quarter.
The WR missed the whole training camp after getting surgery for a torn meniscus and only headed to practice recently. Pat has an idea about the struggle of his teammate, and hence, he has expressed his full support to the athlete.
“I have trust in [Toney]. He missed a lot of training camp, and obviously, he wanted to play and fought [during] rehab hard so he could play and stuff’s not always going to go your way.”
The 27-year-old dual-threat continued his supportive speech saying the Chiefs would do everything possible to help Kadarius bounce back to his earlier form.
“Obviously he would’ve wanted to catch a few of those in the game, but I’ve trusted he’s going to be that guy that I go to in those crucial moments, and he’s going to make the catch and win us some games like he did last year. So we’re going to continue to work him in, get him more and more reps, and I’m sure that those drops will kind of disappear.”
The Chiefs are going to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in their Week 2 game. Do you think that they should rely on Toney in that game as well? Or Do you think that they should acquire Mike Evans from the Bucs to give him a potential chance to be a change-maker in Kansas City? Tell us your opinions in the comment section.
