After Sean O’Malley wins first bantamweight title with brutal KO, UFC president talks on ‘Dana White Privilege’ in recent presser

Despite Sean O’Malley’s remarkable knockout victory over Aljamain Sterling, there were many within the MMA community who were critical of him receiving the title shot initially. Many believed the decision favored Sean due to the so-called ‘Dana White privilege’.

However, at Boston’s TD Garden, Sean had a strong answer to the criticisms by dethroning “The Funk Master”. Following the fight, the UFC head honcho decided to take matters into his own hands and addressed the allegations himself.

UFC president talks on ‘Dana White Privilege’

At the post-fight press conference, Dana directly spoke about the matter. The UFC president clarified O’Malley’s opportunity was not due to any “Dana White privilege,” firmly asserting such a notion doesn’t exist within his organization.

“You don’t become number two in the world without earning it. I don’t pick that; you people do. He went in there and delivered tonight. There is no such thing as ‘Dana White privilege’ in this company,” Dana said.

White further explained that a fighter wouldn’t be number two without demonstrating their skill and quality, indicating Sean’s pre-fight ranking. He added that certain matchups might not always happen as alternative fighters step in when needed.

“You got a situation where Merab Dvalishvili won’t fight the champion. It’s just the way that timing and everything else plays out. When you get to a title shot. You’ve earned it here.” Dana added.

Many fight enthusiasts would agree that Dvalishvili deserved a title shot, but he declined to face Sterling due to their close friendship. The UFC Head clarified that multiple factors come into play behind the scenes when selecting a title challenger.

Sean O’Malley’s journey to first UFC title

In O’Malley’s title clash with Aljo, the pivotal moment came in the second round as one of Sterling’s offensive moves left his head undefended, allowing Sean to capitalize with a precise punch that initiated Sterling’s downfall.

This victory probably didn’t come as much of a surprise for those closely watching Sean’s rise within the bantamweight division. Debuting in 2018, Sugar embarked on a remarkable three-fight win streak before encountering Marlon Vera.

Despite the loss to Chito, Sean rebounded with impressive four consecutive victories, ultimately earning a shot at the title. With a current record of 16-1-0, the 28-year-old fighter seems to be aiming for a rematch against Chito to defend his title in December.
