Alexia Putellas makes history overtaking Jenni Hermoso to become Barcelona Femeni’s all-time top goalscorer

Alexia Putellas is one of the most influential soccer players of her generation, especially in her native Spain. The 29-year-old has been an inspiring figure in Spanish football since her return to Barcelona in 2012, a move that has proved productive for all parties involved.

The Spanish-born forward has been a huge part of the Barcelona Femeni’s setup, and in a crunch match against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, she broke Jenni Hermoso’s record to become the club’s record all-time top goalscorer with 182 goals to her name in 404 appearances.

Who is Spanish footballer Alexia Putellas?

Many may remember Spain’s unceremonious celebration at the last women’s World Cup, which rocked the global soccer community. The RFEF President planted an unwanted kiss on Jenni Hermoso’s lips during the celebrations, causing an uproar which led to the president’s suspension.

One player who did not get to play a pivotal role in the tournament was Alexia Putellas, as she was recovering from an injury but still managed to make a cameo appearance in the final when she came on in the 90th minute.

After leaving the Barcelona youth team in 2006, Alexia Putellas made a name for herself with Espanyol, a club she briefly played first-team football for before moving to Levante in 2011. After a season with the club, she made her return to Barcelona, winning two consecutive league titles in her first two seasons back at the club.

Her performances for Barcelona led to her first inclusion in the FIFPro Women’s World XI in 2017. With her continued rise to the top of her game, she was appointed Barcelona’s first captain in the 2021/2022 season, a move that proved beneficial to both parties as she had one of her best seasons, scoring 34 goals in all competitions, becoming the world’s highest-scoring midfielder that season, and winning her second Ballon d’Or award in a row.

Alexia Putellas becomes Barcelona Femeni’s all-time top goalscorer

Alexia Putellas joins Lionel Messi in Barcelona’s history books as she overtakes Jenni Hermoso to become the club’s all-time top goalscorer with 182 goals. Jenni Hermoso, who reportedly sued the former RFEF President Luis Rubiales, had previously held the record until she left the club in 2022 to play in Mexico for Pachuca, where she is now dazzling as well.

Putellas joined the club’s elite group of players against Atletico Madrid on Sunday night as she scored the game’s only goal to give Barcelona a 1-0 win in the crunch match.

Talking to DAZN after the game, Putellas said, “I’ve just been told I have broken it – I was not even thinking about it.”

“It’s a privilege and an honor to move past my teammate Jenni. It was a pleasure to play with her at this club,” she concluded.
