Amad Diallo hasn’t had the best of times at Manchester United. The youngster joined the Red Devils from Atalanta in the summer of 2021 for a reported fee of around $30 million, with the 21-year-old signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford. Despite being viewed as one of the best young talents in Europe, he hasn’t enjoyed enough game time at the club.
This is his first full season as a first-team player since signing for United. He was recently linked to a move away from the club due to his lack of regular minutes. However, whatever feeling he had about his situation, disappeared into thin air last night as he scored the goal of his career against Liverpool. He also channeled his inner Lionel Messi fanboy with his celebration.
Amad Diallo recreates Lionel Messi’s iconic celebration
El Clasico is one of the most exciting games in the world of football and Lionel Messi scored the winner of one such iconic clash on April 24, 2017. The Argentine headed to the section where the Real Madrid fans were, took off his shirt, and revealed his name and number on the back to them. That is one of the most iconic celebrations in football history, although it got him a yellow card.
Amad Diallo did the same celebration after scoring the winner against Liverpool in Manchester United’s FA Cup tie with the Reds. With the game tied at 3-3 and a few seconds on the usual 120 minutes played, Amad Diallo and Garnacho launched a counterattack after defending a Liverpool corner successfully. In a 2-on-1 situation, Diallo slotted the ball to Garnacho while he kept running to create an option for the Argentine youngster.
Amad Diallo got the reverse pass from Garnacho and coolly slotted home the winner as he wheeled to celebrate with United fans in the stands. He took his shirt off to reveal his name and number, just like Lionel Messi had done a few years ago. He later posted both celebrations on his TikTok page, channeling his inner Lionel Messi fanboy.
Amad Diallo explains his red card after scoring heroics
Despite scoring a late winner, Amad Diallo didn’t finish the game with the rest of his teammates, as he received marching orders for a second bookable offence after scoring the winner. Diallo had received a yellow card for a foul on Alexis Mac Allister about five minutes earlier. It was an automatic booking as soon as he took his shirt off to celebrate his match-winning goal, with the Manchester United youngster providing an explanation later.
“What a game today; I think we deserved the win,” the former Atalanta youngster told ITV. “One of the best games of the season, so I’m very happy. It was the best goal of my career. I forgot the first yellow card, so I’m really disappointed to get the red but the most important for me was to get the win. Everyone came to me and said I deserved it. The most important thing for me today was the win,” he added.
It was indeed a deserved moment for Diallo, who had deactivated his Instagram and Twitter accounts just a week ago. This fueled speculation that he had fallen out with Erik ten Hag. Now the Ivorian winger came forward to explain that he only did this to focus on the month of Ramadan, a unique period in the Islamic calendar.
