The Indianapolis Colts are sitting at the second spot of the AFC East with a 3-3 mark, and the major success of their offensive line was brought by new starter Anthony Richardson. After being drafted this year, the quarterback has managed to create a buzz in the O-line by showcasing performance that even seasoned veterans fail to achieve.
Just recently, Richardson has earned the feat of becoming the first signal-caller ever to rush for a touchdown in each of his first three games. While the trajectory was forecasted to be going upward gradually, the young star faced a significant setback after sustaining an injury, and the latest update says that he would have to say goodbye to the entire season.
Colts owner gives latest update on Anthony Richardson’s injury
Richardson is one of those few rookies who has been able to compensate his franchise for a high draft pick by completing 59.5% of his passes for 577 yards, three touchdowns along one interception in just four matches. He rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns as well and managed to earn heavy praise from Aaron Rodgers as well.
However, this outstanding performance streak came to an end following the injury he sustained in week 5. When the Colts fans were speculating about the QB’s conditions, the team owner Jim Irsay came up with an unsatisfactory update on Monday, saying the rookie might be done for the 2023 NFL season, as per ESPN.
“The most likelihood is he’s probably going to be gone for the year..I mean, it’s not definite but [he] probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.”
While Irsay said the news is not 100% confirmed, Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen insisted they are trying to make a decision in the best interests of both the starter and the team. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport had earlier reported that the young star and his franchise had reached several opinions in deciding the potential approach to his recovery. Rapoport also added the QB is most likely to undergo a season-ending surgery.
What is Colts’ rookie QB Anthony Richardson’s injury?
In the Colts game against the Tennessee Titans, Richardson suffered an injury on his right throwing shoulder after hitting to the ground abruptly. He was seen staying down on the field for some moments before heading to the medical tent. X-rays came back negative, and the Florida native couldn’t resume his play once again.
The No.4 overall pick was later diagnosed with a Grade 3 AC joint sprain after conducting an MRI. He was placed on injured reserve last week, which would keep him out of the squad for at least the next four games. The signal-caller couldn’t play in the Colts’ week 6 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and had to see his team’s 20-37 loss from the sideline.
Richardson had also missed the final minute of the Colts season-opening match due to a bruised knee and sore ankle. In the week 2 match against the Houston Texans, he left the field with a concussion in the first half and missed the next week due to being under the NFL’s concussion protocol.
