Antoine Griezmann doesn’t get enough credit for his good work, especially at Atletico Madrid. Well, one could say the man left the club when they needed him the most to join bitter rivals Barcelona, which was unforgivable at the time. However, Griezmann also deserves some credit for staying at the club when they were slammed with a transfer ban.
His return to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona hasn’t particularly softened the stance of the Atletico Ultras. However, Antoine Griezmann became the club’s all-time record goalscorer despite defeat to Real Madrid in the Supercopa semi-finals yesterday, much to the Frenchman’s delight.
Antoine Griezmann becomes Atletico’s all-time top scorer
Antoine Griezmann put his legacy at Atletico Madrid on the line when he decided to leave for Barcelona to play alongside Lionel Messi. Sadly, despite completing the switch for a lot of money, the Frenchman failed to truly justify his price tag, making him one of the biggest flops of the club, including Phillipe Coutinho, Arda Turan, and Ousmane Dembele.
Two years after leaving the club of his heart, the prodigal son returned, and although he was met with a hostile reception from the fans, his commitment has been more than laudable.
Griezmann is one of the top scorers in La Liga this season with 11 goals, just two behind Jude Bellingham, who sits at the summit of the goalscoring charts. The former Real Sociedad man has been at his absolute best and showed that against Real Madrid in yesterday’s Supercopa semi-final tie.
Griezmann scored once and provided another in the 5-3 defeat to their cross-city rivals, and although his team lost, it was a record-breaking night for the Frenchman, who became the club’s all-time record goalscorer to break Luis Aragones’ record at the club.
Antoine Griezmann now has 174 goals in 365 games for the club and still has enough time to set more milestones, as he’s only 32. Although the Frenchman has claimed he could move to the MLS later in his career, one thing is certain: he will score more goals for Atletico Madrid for a few more years before making this switch.
Toni Kross reacts as Real beat Atletico
The Madrid derby is always a feisty affair, and that was on display again when both clubs met in Spain’s Supercopa semi-final yesterday. Real Madrid needed the game to go into extra-time to secure their win after playing out a 3-3 draw in regular time.
Mario Hermoso put Atleti ahead in the sixth minute, getting on the end of a cross from Antoine Griezmann before Antonio Rudiger equalized 14 minutes later. Ferland Mendy put Real Madrid ahead in the 29th minute, but the lead wouldn’t last long as Griezmann pulled another one for Atletico Madrid eight minutes later.
Two late goals by both clubs saw the game end in a draw and into extra-time, where Real Madrid killed it off, thanks to goals from Dani Carvajal and Brahim Diaz, to make it 5-3.
Toni Kroos, who came in as a game-changer for Real Madrid, couldn’t help but react after the match.
“That was fun today. Amazing crowd,” the German midfielder wrote on his social media.
