Arman Tsarukyan’s troubles with Bobby Green did not affect his performance at UFC Austin. The Armenian lightweight secured a quick finish of top-ranked Beneil Dariush, making a statement in the UFC’s lightweight division.
Tsarukyan and Green were involved in an altercation at the Athlete Hotel in Austin during fight week. Unfortunately for Green, he lost the co-main event lightweight bout to Jalin Turner, who replaced Green’s original opponent, Dan Hooker on short notice.
Arman Tsarukyan calls out Islam Makhachev
Arman Tsarukyan’s UFC debut was against the current UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, at UFC Fight Night 149 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The fight was one of the toughest in Makhachev’s UFC career, and Tsarukyan gave him a run for his money.
In the post-victory octagon interview over Beneil Dariush, Tsarukyan had a message for Islam Makhachev. “So, Islam is at a different level as a fighter, but we fought four years ago. Now, I was 22 years old then, and I’m 27 now. Guys, I’ve improved, and the next fight is going to be a different one. I’m going to knock him out,” said Tsarukyan
Makhachev is now the pound-for-pound king in the UFC and will be facing Charles Oliveira in his upcoming bout, according to Dana White. Justin Gaethje, the BMF champion, is waiting in the wings for the next title shot. Nevertheless, the win over Dariush will most likely put Tsarukyan in the top 5 of the rankings and will position him close to a title shot.
Before the fight, the main topic of discussion was the altercation of Tsarukyan with Bobby Green. Tsarukyan shoved Green after Green commented on his fighting style negatively, which did not go well with Armenian. In response, Green punched one of the teammates of Tsarukyan.
Arman Tsarukyan beats Beneil Dariush
Arman Tsarukyan headlined UFC Austin against Beneil Dariush with Bobby Green and Jalin Turner in the co-main event. UFC Austin delivered with a string of finishes and action-packed fights. Both Tsarukyan and Turner won Performance of the Night bonuses for their quick finishes.
Tsarukyan defeated Dariush in just 64 seconds with a powerful move. He first delivered a knee that did not hit but followed it up with a right hand on a single leg. Darisuh was hurt and dropped down due to the impact and Tsarukyan followed it up with ground and pound, forcing referee Mark Smith to step in.
The stoppage was at the right time by the referee, unlike the co-main event where Turner landed extra blows on Green before referee Kerry Hatley stepped in. Interestingly, Arman Tsarukyan in the post-fight press conference mocked Green’s fate at the hands of Turner.
Tsarukyan is now on a three-fight win streak. Earlier he had a five-fight win streak, which was snapped by Mateusz Gamrot at UFC Fight Night 57. Dariush, on the other hand, has now lost two fights in a row after an 8 fight-win streak. Nevertheless, the win has made an Islam Makhachev vs Arman Tsarukyan II quite a possibility.
