Professional wrestling is well known for the physical toll it takes on its athletes. These performers often sustain injuries as they strive to provide top-notch entertainment for their fans. Another wrestler to join the list of resilient performers is the dynamic WWE SmackDown star, Asuka. She has recently been confirmed to have suffered a knee injury during last week’s episode of SmackDown.
Fans became concerned when ‘The Empress’ was absent from WWE’s house shows over the weekend. These concerns were further compounded by observations of her limping during the conclusion of SmackDown last week.
Asuka reportedly suffered an injury during SmackDown
The journey to WrestleMania 40 has had its fair share of hiccups. Initially, the plans involved The Rock, Cody Rhodes, and Roman Reigns. However, these plans changed a few times. Furthermore, an injury to CM Punk led to a change in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. Unfortunately, another injury has now emerged, which could potentially disrupt WWE’s plans for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships.
According to PWInsider, Asuka sustained a knee injury during the latest episode of SmackDown last Friday. The injury was no surprise to viewers, as Asuka was limping during the final scene of SmackDown, where she, Kairi, Dakota Kai, and WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY attacked Bayley after her match against Kai.
Over the weekend, The Empress was taken off the road as a precaution after sustaining an injury. She is expected to undergo medical tests to determine the severity of the injury. It is currently unclear whether Asuka will be able to continue wrestling while dealing with the injury or if she will need to take time off to recover.
This is the second notable injury for Asuka in the past three years; previously, she missed nine months of action due to an arm injury from July 2021 to April 2022. It was anticipated that Asuka and Kairi would defend their titles at WrestleMania, but no match had been confirmed yet.
However, if Asuka has to take a long break due to her injury, she would be the second WWE women’s star to miss the event this year, following Charlotte Flair, who got injured while wrestling Asuka in December and is expected to return later this year.
Potential WWE star to replace Asuka for WrestleMania 40
It seems like the curse of the Women’s Tag Team Championships has struck again. On the latest episode of SmackDown, Asuka appeared to have injured her foot as she was limping during the show’s final segment when Damage CTRL attacked Bayley.
Although there is no confirmation of how serious the injury is, it is speculated that it could be a broken ankle. This injury might force her out of the WrestleMania 40 plans, and WWE has already removed Asuka from live events.
Asuka is known for her resilience, but in the video below, she can be seen limping and trying to finish the match. It’s unclear when she injured her foot, but it could be problematic for WWE if she can’t participate in the buildup for Bayley’s match with Iyo Sky at WrestleMania. Although the Women’s Tag Team Championships haven’t been mentioned, an injury may not affect WWE’s plans.
It has been speculated that The Empress sustained an injury when she jumped off the ring apron and landed awkwardly. However, before Iyo Sky entered the ring, Asuka was jumping around with no apparent issues.
It is hoped that the injury is not too serious. If Asuka is unable to wrestle, the good news for WWE is that Dakota Kai has recently returned from her injury and could potentially take Asuka’s place.
There has been a recurring pattern of bad luck for the holders of the Women’s Tag Team titles. Since the introduction of these titles, almost every team that has held them has suffered an injury to one of their members. Unfortunately, due to the timing of these injuries, the titles have not gained much momentum or been able to establish themselves as significant in WWE.
However, when the Kabuki Warriors won the championship, it was seen as an opportunity for the titles to become something big. Unfortunately, Asuka’s injury is just the latest in a long series of injuries that have plagued the Women’s Tag Team titles.
