Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been struggling with knee and wrist injuries after reaching his crescendo at his first Grand Slam final in 2022 Wimbledon, which he lost to Novak Djokovic. An injury crisis has since led Kyrgios to drop below 250 in the world rankings, but the Aussie revealed recently that he will be back on the court for the 2024 season.
However, the tennis star has already returned to tennis, but a twist, settling in the position of a commentator at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Kyrgios playfully acknowledges Djokovic’s World No.1 feat with humorous twist
Nick Kyrgios accepted the role of commentator and analyst for The Tennis Channel at the ATP Finals in Turin and was successful in predicting that Novak Djokovic was going to win his 7th Nitto ATP Finals title. Meanwhile, the tennis star didn’t feature in any competition this season due to injury.
At the ATP Finals in Turin, Nick Kyrgios admitted his respect and admiration to Novak Djokovic during his commentary sessions. In a lighthearted question and answer session on social media, the Aussie invited followers to ask fun questions only. Among several questions, one question attracted the attention of all the fans when it enquired: Do Aliens Exist? Kyrgios shared an image of Novak Djokovic using the same phrase Do Alien Exist? comparing the Serbian to an Alien.
During the ATP Finals commentary Nick Kyrgios had his fair share of highlights and successful predictions over the course of his five days commentating the action from Turin, the most popular of all which was picking Novak Djokovic to defeat Jannik Sinner in the final, in a reversal of their earlier group stage encounter.
“I think I’m gonna go with Novak,” Kyrgios said on air. “I was really eager to see his performance today against [Carlos] Alcaraz [in the semifinals] to see how he was feeling. But after today’s performance [a 6-3, 6-2 win], I’m gonna safely say Novak. I think he’s gonna steady the ship. He’s gonna understand what he didn’t do right the first time.”
Novak Djokovic aims for additional milestone beyond Olympic success in 2024
Novak Djokovic revealed that he has a huge desire to finally win a singles gold at the Olympic Games, with Paris 2024 in his sights as the place earn the achievement. The Serbian has only a bronze medal from the Beijing 2008 and fell short in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Djokovic became the first player to win seven ATP Finals titles with a straight set victory over Italian favourite Jannik Sinner, and is presently in Malaga in a bid to win the Davis Cup for Serbia. He is preparing to face Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie at the knockout phase of the event.
“Of course, the Olympics are a huge desire of mine – it’s a unique opportunity, I have a bronze from Beijing 2008,” Djokovic said. “A lot of things are different at the Olympics – you can’t bring your whole team, some of the routines you usually have are limited; there are a lot of athletes from other sports, which gives you the energy on one hand, but it drains you on the other. All those things you mentioned – I want it all, why not, and we’ll see where it ends.”
