Formula 1 is an action-packed sport characterized by its intense nature, which is a major draw for millions of fans. However, the inherent risk and danger associated with the sport often lead to life-threatening incidents and permanent injuries.
Roman Grosjean, a French-Swiss driver, miraculously survived a fatal incident during the global pandemic period, the details of the accident were truly shocking.
How did Romain Grosjean survive the fiery crash at the 2020 Bahrain GP?
Romain Grosjean was the main star driver of the Haas F1 team during the COVID-19 pandemic period. However, for Formula 1 enthusiasts, what came as a bigger blow was the extremely fatal and dangerous incident that happened during the Bahrain Grand Prix event, which could even have dire consequences had luck failed to favour Grosjean at that instance.
On the opening lap, the French driver collided with the AlphaTauri of Daniil Kvyat, which resulted in the car breaking through the barrier at an incredibly high speed. At that very moment, the car was disfigured into two parts and consumed in a ball of flames.
Grosjean somehow managed to pull himself out of the fire and climbed over the guard rail to Shortlu, after which serious medical help was brought his way, and he was immediately sent to the hospital. However, unbelievably, despite the severity of the crash, the Haas driver survived with a few injuries, minor burns, and a sprained ankle.
Reflecting on the crash later on, Grosjean expressed his perspective by saying,” I had to break the headrest, punching it with my helmet, and then I eventually managed to get my helmet through and stand up in the seat.”
“I realised my left foot was stuck into the chassis, and I pulled as hard as I could on my left leg. My shoe stayed in the chassis, but my foot came loose, so I was free to exit the car,” he recounted.
Where is Romain Grosjean now?
Following his horrendous crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Haas driver retired from the Formula 1 industry and, since then, has been involved in an entirely new, flourishing career that suits his lifestyle too.
Grosjean’s life has completely evolved now, with him being a Miami resident. He is an aeroplane pilot and driver in IndyCar, the American series for Andretti Autosport.
However, ironically, he used to assure his wife that he would never drive an Indycar before the accident occurred. The incident appears to have been a significant turning point for him, leading to a complete lifestyle change. This weekend he will also drive in the 24 Hours at Daytona, which is an endurance race on the Atlantic coastline of Florida.
