Barcelona director reveals one factor that likely to impact Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo’s future

The Spanish champions, Barcelona, have been less than impressive compared to their previous campaign, but fortunately seem to have finally found their momentum, albeit a bit late. However, they are trailing by a massive eight points behind Real Madrid in their La Liga title defense, standing second on the league’s points table.

Following successive triumphs against two of the toughest sides they’ve faced this season, Napoli and Atletico Madrid, in the domestic league. Barcelona is now devising plans for Ansu Fati, and to retain two of their key players beyond their current loan terms: the Portuguese star duo, Joao Felix, and Joao Cancelo.

Barcelona director talks about Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo’s future

Barcelona secured the signings of two Portuguese internationals on season-long loans until the end of the 2023–24 season, in August 2023. Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid and Joao Cancelo from Manchester City, after struggling to secure regular places at their respective clubs, have been remarkable in the Blaugrana colors.

This season, Atletico loanee Joao Felix has made 34 appearances, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists across all competitions. Meanwhile, City loanee Joao Cancelo has impressed with 32 appearances and a contribution of 8 goals. Their performances have made the club’s top executives keen to secure their permanent stay at Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has long been in favor of extending the duo’s stay and recently spoke again about the club’s perspective. “We would like to keep both João Félix and João Cancelo here, provided the right conditions are met with Atlético and Man City. It depends on the conditions of the deal,” Deco stated.

However, their wish to convert the loanees of their star players into permanent ones would require substantial amounts to meet their respective release clauses. Reportedly, league rivals are demanding €80 million to allow Felix to leave, while Cancelo’s price tag is set at €25 million, totaling over €100 million altogether.

Barcelona will not be a part of Ansu Fati future

A few seasons ago, Ansu Fati was hailed as Lionel Messi’s replacement, emerging as a bright talent from Barcelona’s La Masia academy. In recognition of his promising campaigns, he was awarded the iconic Messi’s number 10 shirt. However, his career trajectory took a hit due to a series of injury setbacks.

Recent reports from Spain suggest that Barcelona has decided that Ansu Fati is no longer a priority for the club, hinting that he might not return next season. This development comes as the club is already searching the market for new wingers and discussing making Joao Felix’s move permanent.

Earlier this season, Fati was sent on a season-long loan to Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion to reignite his career. Despite his long-term deal at the club, last year he committed to a long-term contract that includes a staggering 1 billion euro release clause.
