Bayer Leverkusen takes step further in deterring interest of top European clubs over RB Jeremie Frimpong with new contract

It is seldom that a rising young star refuses to move from a small club to a big club. Usually, players that are on the rise are tempted by a big club’s lucrative deal. However, Bayer Leverkusen have managed to keep star player Jeremie Frimpong, despite vast interest from many big clubs.

The Dutch right back has already established himself as one of the world’s best talents in his position, and is probably the best in the Bundesliga. Having been brilliant for the German club, the 22 year old was wanted by many top European clubs including Manchester United.

Jeremie Frimpong signs new long-term contract

Jeremie Frimpong eventually has decided to stay at the club to further develop his abilities under manager Xabi Alonso. To prove his loyalty to the club, the fullback has signed a new contract until 2028 today.

After signing his new contract, Frimpong said, “It’s a brilliant club. I’ve been here almost three years now and the team keeps on growing and growing.”

The Netherlands international moved to Leverkusen in January 2021 from Celtic, and was then relatively unknown. But in just under three years time, he has become one of the best fullbacks in the German league. Being only 22, he will only keep getting better and better, and Leverkusen have done a great job managing to tie him to a long contract.

Jeremie Frimpong is particularly known for owning an attacking mindset, having 15 goal contributions last season for Bayer Leverkusen. Of those, eight of them were direct goals and 7 were assists. Only forward Moussa Diaby has more goal contributions in the team with 17. Frimpong has already started the season well, with a goal and three assists for the club.

It is no surprise that Frimpong decided to stay at Leverkusen, as the team are currently top of the Bundesliga. The German club has hit if off right from the start, with 5 wins in the first 6 games. They have already faced last season’s champions Bayern Munich, holding them to a brilliant 2-2 draw.

Much of their success is due to manager Xabi Alonso who has improved the team significantly. He has brought out the best in his players, including Jeremie Frimpong, which is one of the reasons why Frimpong extended his stay at the club. Xabi’s team have the best attacking and defensive record in the league, and the Spaniard’s managerial prowess has also earned him interest from many clubs, including Real Madrid.

Leverkusen will face Molde as part of their Europa League campaign on Friday, and will hope to continue their brilliant form with another win.
