Bengals QB Joe Burrow out of NFL 2023 season with possible surgery on wrist injury

The Cincinnati Bengals haven’t had the best of seasons this year. The entire team has blown hot and cold over the course of 10 games and there’s no telling which version of the team shows up on the pitch in their next game.

With their playoff hopes dangling in the balance, the last thing they needed was another injury to an already long list, especially when the player in question is QB1 Joe Burrow, who is a strong NFL MVP contender. Let’s find out more about his time on the sidelines.

Already in the middle of an insipid run of form, this injury news comes as a shock to many of the Bengals, as Joe Burrow was their one ray of hope for playoff qualification. During a disappointing loss at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, Joe Burrow landed awkwardly on his wrist, injuring it in the process.

Eventually, he had to leave the field because he couldn’t continue. He was seen leaving the pitch while holding his wrist, clearly indicating that the impact was grave. Later that night, news came out that Burrow had suffered a torn ligament in his right wrist, an injury that rules him out for the remainder of the season, severely denting the Bengals’ playoff hopes.

“I felt a pop in the middle of the throw. I tried to give it a go but couldn’t get it done and got the news today. I had a feeling before we got the official news (what the result would be),” said Burrow.

How long will it take to recover from torn ligament in wrist?

After suffering the injury, the 26-year-old was seen writhing in pain and leaving the field in a hurry. Speculations after the news of the injury suggest that a torn ligament in the throwing arm usually requires surgery to recover. When there’s surgery in question, the recovery period also extends over a longer duration of time.

“He knew he had done something at that point,” said Dr. Timothy Kremchek, “And chances are it was over in the inner aspect, or we call it the radial aspect of the wrist. There’s a lot of ligaments over here.”

“Once they know what’s wrong, they want to know how to fix it, and then they want you to fix it so it’s behind them,” he continued. “They can think about their rehab. They can think about their recovery. They know exactly when they’ll be able to start throwing, running, working out.”

Joe Burrow is expected to make a complete recovery by the start of the 2024 season. What do you think about his injury? Let us know down in the comments.
