Bobby Green wrecks Tony Ferguson’s comeback, El Cucuy suffers his sixth consecutive defeat at UFC 291

Tony Ferguson’s string of defeats in the UFC persisted as he experienced his sixth consecutive loss in the octagon. After yet another brutal setback, there are concerns about whether this could mark the end of his MMA career.

The main card of UFC 291 featured a highly anticipated matchup between Tony and Bobby Green, two seasoned veterans of the UFC. Given their reputations as formidable opponents inside the Octagon, this bout generated a lot of excitement and anticipation among fans at the Salt Lake City Delta Centre and beyond.

Bobby Green defeats Tony Ferguson

Despite the considerable anticipation surrounding the matchup, Tony failed at yet another attempt at reigniting his career during the third round of his battle against Green. The defeat came by way of submission, leaving fans and analysts questioning what lies ahead for “El Cucuy” in the sport.

On the other hand, for Bobby, the victory marked a remarkable comeback after facing consecutive defeats at the hands of Islam Makhachev and Drew Dober in 2022.

Meanwhile, Ferguson’s struggle in the octagon continued, with his last win dating back to about four years ago in UFC 238 when he defeated Donald Cerrone.

Tony Ferguson’s downfall in the UFC continues

El Cucuy’s bout against Bobby was seen as a crucial moment in his career, a chance for him to make a statement and regain momentum in the highly competitive lightweight division.

Tony’s loss to Nate Diaz last year was a significant setback, extending his losing streak to five fights. As a former interim lightweight champion, Ferguson looked determined to reclaim his lost glory with a victory over ‘King’, but unfortunately, he couldn’t achieve that.

Now, the question remains whether Tony will potentially add another name to his list of consecutive defeats, which already includes Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush, Nate Diaz, Michael Chandler, and Bobby Green, or if he will decide to retire and hang up his gloves for good.

Tony was indeed a formidable force in the division during the tenure of 155 pounds most-dominant champion to date, Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov. When the Dagestani hung up his gl0ves, many fans and fighters including Tony criticized him citing a wide range of issues.

However, the AKA prospect was probably right in his call as there is a new generation of fighters coming in and old timers like Ferguson don’t really seem to have a place there.
