Joe Cordina, the IBF super featherweight champion, recently defended his title against Edward Vazquez in what was his third defense of the title. Cordina, who won the title from Kenichi Ogawa with a second-round knockout in June 2022, was stripped of the title due to injury. Nonetheless, Cordina won the title back with an action-packed fight against the then-undefeated Shavkat Rakhimov.
The Welsh boxer, who has an accomplished amateur record, will now look to cement as one of the best in the professional boxing circuit. Cordina was a European Amateur Championships gold medalist in 2015 and bronze medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Joe Cordina reportedly being targeted to defend his IBF title
Rumors swirl of Joe Cordina defending his IBF title against IBO super featherweight champion Anthony Cacace. Cacace won the IBO title from Michael Magnesi with a split decision victory and defended it against Damian Wrzesinski with a unanimous decision victory. The boxing scene was the first to report the news of the fight.
“Joe Cordina is reportedly being targeted to defend his IBF super-featherweight world title vs Anthony Cacace on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, Feb 17th in Saudi Arabia.”, tweeted talkSport’s Michael Benson. However, as of yet, there has not been confirmation from either the management teams of Cordina or Cacace of the fight.
Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are scheduled to fight for the undisputed heavyweight title in Riyadh in February. Cordina is rumored to defend his title in the undercard of the event billed as Ring of Fire. No other fights have been announced for the anticipated boxing event in Saudi Arabia.
Tony Sims discusses Joe Cordina’s prosperous year in 2023
The Welsh Wizard Joe Cordina is ably coached by coach Tony Sims who has trained the likes of Anthony Joshua, Darren Barker, Kevin Mitchell, Conor Benn, Ted Cheeseman, and Lee Purdy among others. Sims recently spoke to International Boxing News where he delved into a lot about the fighters he coaches, and especially Cordina.
“Great year for Joe. Obviously, we know the year before that he got stripped of his belt because he broke his hand. He regained the belt against Rakhimov, and as you say, it was like Fight of the Year.”, said Sims of Cordina’s impressive performance in 2023, particularly against Shavkat Rakhimov to win back the IBF title.
“And obviously, finished the year by defending his belt against Vasquez in Monaco. So, Joe’s had a fantastic year, and going into 2024, he’s looking at going into some big fights,” Sims further congratulated Cordina for his title defense against Vasquez to close out 2023 in style.
“Probably at the minute, like Lamont Roach fight where he just won a WBA title, Navarrete is obviously WBO champion, and that’d be a good fight for him, and uh, just trying to unify the belts, really”, Sims said of Cordina’s plan to unify the title with WBA champion Lamont Roach Jr. and WBO champion Emanuel Navarrete.
