The San Francisco 49ers squad was subjected to a series of criticism after going to the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason opener with 34-7. Nevertheless, one of the relieving news for the team was they did not fall prey to any new injuries during Sunday’s contest. Now, the 49ers starter Brock Purdy is also set to glorify the field, marking a double happiness for them ahead of the new season.
Besides Brock, San Francisco’s head coach Kyle Shanahan named six players who are likely to return throughout the week including Elijah Mitchell, Drake Jackson, Kalia Davis, Dre Greenlaw, Robert Beal Jr., and Danny Gray. However, George Odum, Oren Burks, and Ray-Ray McCloud are not returning in the preseason.
49ers QB Brock Purdy overcame huge challenge
On 29 January, Purdy tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in a match against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game and since then, he couldn’t make his appearance to the live game preps. He is still recovering from his elbow surgery of the offseason and has been thoroughly monitored during the process.
However, during his conference call Monday, Shanahan announced the signal-caller has been cleared to appear in back-to-back three practices without an off day, marking a notable improvement in his recovery from the UCL surgery. He is now one step closer to being a starter in the 49ers’ September 10 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Purdy strives to recover as much strength as possible during the rehabilitation procedure
Purdy was cleared to throw without restrictions in July, albeit San Francisco’s general manager John Lynch they would stick to a schedule when the second-year quarterback throws in the lead-up to Week 1. The dual-threat also said he is throwing consecutively to ensure he can do everything without feeling any pain.
Lynch along with other front office members could sense the improvement and he said the 23-year-old star constantly managed to “hit his markers” on his recovery time. The 49ers starter is in the run to continue his mission of bouncing back stronger and noted last week that his arm feels good.
“In terms of my arm and everything, yeah, my arm feels great. Just still building back-to-back days and trying to gain all the strength that I can back from the rehab process of things and I feel really confident.”
Brock Purdy’s prolonged struggle to return back to the field is undoubtedly laudable. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if he can save his beloved team from potential backlash by winning their next preseason game.
