Ex-Broncos QB Steve Tensi dead at 81
According to his obituary from Hampton Funeral Service, Steve Tensi passed away on Friday in his hometown of Boone, North Carolina, at the age of 81. Tensi, who played for the Broncos from 1967 to 1970, left behind a legacy that resonated deeply with teammates, friends, and fans.
The Broncos organization, which recently saw a change in their quarterback room, expressed their condolences in a statement. They acknowledged Tensi’s contributions to the team during his tenure.
“We’re saddened by the passing of former Broncos QB Steve Tensi, who played for us from 1967–1970. Our organization sends its sincere condolences to the Tensi family, his friends and former teammates,” the team statement said.
Billy Thompson, a former Broncos defensive back, fondly remembered Tensi as a good teammate.
“I’m really sorry to hear that. He was a good teammate. We had a lot of fun together. He was one of the guys, always joking around. He always had something good to say.”
The veteran received well-deserved recognition for their achievements, being inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame in 1995. After his football career, he extended his love for the game by coaching quarterbacks at Wichita State University and later coaching wide receivers for the World Football League’s Chicago Fire. Afterwards, he pursued a career in construction and made notable contributions in Miami before eventually settling in Boone, North Carolina, in 1988, via NBC Sports.
