Browns TE David Njoku opens up on his tragic fire incident that left him with horrific facial burns: “I should’ve been blinded”

After securing a dominating 27-3 victory over the Tennessee Titans, the Cleveland Browns witnessed a blow by digesting a 25-point loss against the Baltimore Ravens. Besides the team’s 3-28 defeat, one of the major highlighted topics of the match was the horrible fire accident of their star tight end David Njoku.

After getting drafted by the Browns in 2017, Njoku has appeared in 83 games in seven seasons and started each of the first four games in this season. Hence, the news about the TE’s facial burns raised skepticism about his role in the offense, albeit he played the match graciously. Weeks after the accident, the veteran provided his take on this terrible experience.

Following the Browns practice on Friday, Njoku shed light on his journey of life after the scary accident while calling this an “interesting” experience. He said the burn was so severe that he was at risk to lose his eyes as they were open during the incident, and thanked the Almighty for saving him from such misery.

“When it happened, my eyes were open. So I saw everything and I really should’ve been blinded. Luckily, I’m not. I give all the glory to God.”

The former first-round Draft pick played games two days after sustaining the burns. Meanwhile, he also launched a merchandise brand “Withstand”, with an aim to collect funds for the American Burn Association, and said the initiative was taken to raise awareness among the public about burns.

“I want to use my platform to help bring awareness to an all too common issue and shed some positive light on an otherwise unfortunate incident.”

In four games this season, the offensive weapon caught 16 passes for 138 yards as well as recorded six passes for 46 yards in the Browns’ loss to Baltimore on Oct. 1

Several days ago, Njoku sustained an unfortunate burn to his face and arm while trying to light a fire pit. Following the incident, he didn’t reveal his face and was wearing a tan fur trench coat with a flesh-colored mask after his appearance following the incident.

On Wednesday, twelve days after the burn incident, the seventh-year Miami product shared some snaps of his facial burns in an Instagram post with the caption “Legacy”. Though it was told earlier that the burn was not severe, two images clearly showcased how frightening it was.

The TE also addressed his decision to share the images of his face saying the burn patients feel embarrassed to face the outside world, and hence, his decision was aimed at healing their fear.

“I’ve been getting a lot of messages from other burn victims and nurses that have burn victims, and they were telling me how everybody feels embarrassed to show whatever. So I wanted just to come out forth and show myself so everyone feels a little bit better about themselves. End of the day, things heal.”

The Browns will play against the San Francisco 49ers in their Week 6 matchup on Sunday. Njoku has not taken part in practice this week, and Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com revealed he would probably sit out in the match. What’s your take on the Browns’ star’s unwavering
