The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered their week 5 contest with a 3-1 mark. The team, being in the top spot of the NFC South, met with the top team of the NFC North, the Detroit Lions. In the match between two top teams from two divisions, the Bucs lost by 14 points and proceeded to the 3-2 mark.
Besides on-field rivalry, the Bucs players were excited about one more thing: wearing Creamsicle jerseys that had not been worn in over several years until the match against the Lions. Meanwhile, the team’s offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs did a hilarious thing by refusing to engage in a jersey swap session with one of the players from the rival team.
Bucs’ Tristan Wirfs snubbed jersey swap
A video footage from the Bucs vs Lions game inside the NFL shows Tristan and Lions veteran Penei Sewell having some chit-chat with each other. After having a friendly hug, Penei asked the Bucs offensive star to swap their jerseys.
However, Wirfs instantly refused the offer, but not due to any controversial incident; instead, he wanted to keep his game-worn Creamsicle top with him.
“This?! I gotta keep this one. It’s the creamsicle, you know I gotta keep the creamsicle one,” he said in response, via The Comeback.

Nevertheless, the Bucs vet didn’t completely turn down Sewell’s offer, as he promised to send the lineman another standard Tampa Bay jersey of his. The NFL community divided in two parts following the incident, with some fans claiming that it was a dumb reason to turn down a friendly offer, and some fans saying his action was justified as the players had been too excited regarding the classic uniform.
Bucs Creamsicle Day gets ruined after ugly performance vs Lions
The Creamsicle jerseys used to be worn by the players from 1976 to the late 1990s, and they had not been as popular as now. However, the Bucs team, who were rumored to lose buzz after Tom Brady’s retirement, actually couldn’t keep up the excitement of the fans on the field as they had to embrace a 6-20 loss from Detroit.
Tampa Bay’s offense was terribly inconsistent and failed to stack good plays while recording just one three-and-out on the game. The quarterback Baker Mayfield recorded 19-of-37 passing for 206 yards along with an interception.
Meanwhile, the Bucs’ defense managed to hold the Lions to 20 points, which was undoubtedly laudable. Nevertheless, the D-line also gave up nine of sixteen third-down tries and also failed to create a turnover. With some big teams to face off in the upcoming weeks, Mayfield’s team surely needs to buckle up themselves to ensure a playoff run.
