Conor McGregor has not stepped inside the octagon in almost 3 years but he is still the biggest name in combat sport. As such, fighters target a fight with McGregor more than a title as it is more lucrative to do so and Charles Oliveira is no exception.
The former lightweight champion has a number one contender fight against Arman Tsarukyan lined up. However, like Diego Lima, his head coach, Oliveira targets a money fight more than the fight for the undisputed title.
Charles Oliveira talks on possible Conor McGregor bout
Charles Oliveira has always expressed his interest in a fight with Conor McGregor, the former two-division UFC champion. However, he does not think it will ever happen as revealed in his interview with Brett Okamoto per SportsRush.
“He knows he doesn’t want this fight. He doesn’t want this fight”, said Oliveira when asked about the possibility of a fight with McGregor. The Irishman’s next fight is possibly against Michael Chandler, whom Oliveira defeated to claim the undisputed lightweight title vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Therefore, he thinks he is the worst stylistic matchup for the Irishman. Moreover, Oliveira has also submitted Dustin Poirier who is 2-1 against McGregor. Nevertheless, Oliveira is very respectful towards McGregor’s accomplishments.
The Brazilian praised the performance of McGregor in his debut movie, The Road House, which broke several records at the box office. The action sequences of McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal, the protagonist have already garnered applause from critics and audience alike.
Oliveira also thinks that McGregor’s starring role in the film has opened the pathway for many fighters in the UFC to do the same. Even though many fighters appeared in movies, nobody had a starring role as protagonist or antagonist in mainstream production before McGregor.
Charles Oliveira confident ahead of Arman Tsarukyan bout at UFC 300
Charles Oliveira’s upcoming fight is a number one contender fight against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300. Ahead of the fight, both fighters showcase different characteristics. Unlike Tsarukyan, who has been cocky and arrogant, Oliveira seems confident.
Speaking to Brett Okamoto via translator, Oliveira stated that Tsarukyan is playing his part to build up the fight. To Tsarukyan’s claim of Oliveira being a one-dimensional fighter, the Brazilian believes that being in the UFC for 14 years is a testament to his immense talent.
Oliveira has more to fight for at UFC 300 as he recently announced that Vitoria Brum, his girlfriend is pregnant with a baby boy. On the other hand, Tsarukyan is targeting Justin Gaethje’s BMF belt if victorious against Oliveira.
The last time Oliveira had a child, he went on to become the undisputed lightweight champion with victories over the likes of Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje.
Nonetheless, Islam Makhachev, the undisputed champion, is targeting a fight with Poirier in June but if Tsarukyan or Oliveira grabs a quick finish at UFC 300, they could leapfrog Poirier.
