The New Orleans Saints’ recent addition, Chase Young, is facing a setback as he prepares for the upcoming NFL season. The star player is slated to undergo neck surgery shortly after signing a lucrative one-year, $13 million deal with the Saints. Despite the surgery, there is optimism that Young will be back in action in time for the start of the regular season in September.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Young’s surgery will keep him out of training camp, but the expectation is that he will be fully recovered and ready to contribute once the season kicks off. This news comes as a blow to the Saints, who were banking on Young’s prowess on the field to bolster their defense.

The 2020 AP defensive rookie of the year’s injury woes are not new, as he has faced challenges throughout his career. Last season, he suffered a stinger injury during a preseason game, causing him to miss Washington’s season opener. Yet, he managed to tally 7½ sacks for both the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers. He even added a sack in the Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Chiefs.

Meanwhile, injuries have been a recurring theme throughout Young’s career. In 2021, he suffered a major knee injury, tearing his ACL and rupturing his patellar tendon, per The Advocate. It caused him to miss a significant portion of the season.

Interestingly, the Saints were fully aware of his neck issue when they signed him but remained confident in his abilities.

Saints fans, who have been concerned about the team’s past injuries at the defensive end position, turned to social media to voice their frustration.

Many of them were not shy about sharing their belief that Young may not live up to his hefty contract.

“He’s not worth $13m per year. This dude is just a big name and is overrated asf,” one comment read. 

While San Francisco 49ers star player Brock Purdy is still on his “cost-effective deal,” Young’s contract is seemingly a big one. In this regard, one fan even highlighted his concerns over whether Young’s performance on the field justifies his salary.

With the NFL announcing salary cap constraints for the season, fans questioned the wisdom of the Saints’ decision to invest in Young despite his uncertain health status. Some fans speculated that the Saints’ willingness to overlook potential risks signaled a disregard for financial prudence.
