Chelsea’s season just got even worse with a humiliating defeat to London rivals Arsenal. The Blues have been having one of their worst seasons till date, and it has gotten even worse for them now. They have lost a game against a London side by 5 goals for the first time in Premier League history. It was also their biggest loss to the Gunners in the history of the two clubs.
Chelsea were being hosted by Arsenal at the Emirates yesterday and Mikel Arteta’s side completely dominated the game. Leandro Trossard had opened the scoring, while Ben White and former Blues player Kai Havertz both scored braces. They were also without their star player, Cole Palmer which further compounded the defeat.
The defeat puts even more pressure onto manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has been at risk of being sacked for quite some time now. Despite big expectations and huge financial backing, the Argentine has failed to make an impact at the club. He had to admit after the game that the team played very badly.
Pochettino had signed a two-year contract at the beginning of the season, but could leave after the current season. The board of the club will now contemplate whether to keep him or sack him, and whether the former Tottenham boss still has time to impress them remains to be seen. Only six league games remain, which does not leave a lot of room for Pochettino to impress both fans and the board.
Chelsea’s disastrous season in a nutshell
Chelsea have been having one of their worst seasons till date. Despite bringing in players for record sums, they have been very poor. They are only 9th in the Premier League and have no prospect of playing European soccer next season. Furthermore, they are also going to go trophy less this season, though they had managed to get into the FA Cup semi-finals and lost the Carabao Cup final as well.
The only good thing that seems to have happened this year is the inclusion of Cole Palmer. He has been a revelation for them, and is the primary reason behind their limited success. Chelsea are also facing other problems, and may need to make some big sales to prevent FFP issues for next seasons.
Chelsea will next face Aston Villa on Sunday in the Premier League and will hope for a good result.
