The Kansas City Chiefs squad, led by the superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is now at the top of the AFC West with a 4-1 mark. After facing a blow in their season-opening match with a one-point loss against the Detroit Lions, they overcame the setback and ensured four consecutive victories.
The defending champion smashed the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, and Minnesota Vikings. Now, their next target in week 6 is the Denver Broncos, who have just recently been blown away by the Miami Dolphins with a 50-point victory. Mahome will be leading his team to ensure a 5-1 record, but he himself will be facing a new challenge in the campaign.
Mahomes braces for unique challenge against Broncos
In the Denver vs. Kansas City campaign, the Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson and his offense will be facing one of the league’s best pass defenses in the NFL. Hence, overcoming the setback of the losing streak will be a major challenge for his O-line.
However, more than Wilson, the showdown will be more challenging for Mahomes as he has never played against the league’s last-ranked scoring defense in his career. While many think that playing against a weak defense is a plus point, it actually falls heavily on the signal-callers. If the two-time MVP fails to outshine the Broncos’ vulnerable O-line, his status as arguably the best QB in the league will be heavily questioned.

Meanwhile, though the Denver defense has failed to offer significant challenges to any team’s D-line, they might be putting their best effort to impede Pat’s effort on the field. In their last meeting, the Chiefs secured a near 27-24 victory over the Broncos on Jan. 1, 2023, and hence, clinching a big win is a must for Kansas City’s QB to save his elite spot in the league. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will also be looking for their 16th consecutive win over Denver in the campaign.
Brock Purdy surpasses Patrick Mahomes in ESPN’s QBR
The San Francisco 49ers dual-threat Brock Purdy has been enjoying an incredible season this year. Besides keeping his squad undefeated till now, he pocketed heavy praises from the NFL community as well. Sitting at the eighth spot (1271) this season in terms of passing yards, Mr. Irrelevant might not surpass Mahomes (1287) who is atop of him.
However, the 49ers star managed to overshadow the Chiefs veteran as he leads the league in ESPN’s QBR, which evaluates all signal-callers on all play types on a 0-100 scale based on the strength of opposing defenses faced.
Purdy ranks at the top with an impressive QBR of 83.6, while Pat ranks fourth in the race with a 73.3 QBR. The Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen (78.3 QBR) is in the second spot, and the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa (75.6 QBR) is in the third position. From San Francisco’s QB3 to QB2 and now an incredible starter, Brock has become an inspiration for many underrated talents in the league.
