The San Francisco 49ers are atop the NFC West with a 5-1 record. They were one of the two teams until week 5 to go undefeated. However, the Cleveland Browns gave them a blow by breaking their winning streak in week 6, despite not having Deshaun Watson at the helm due to injuries.
The 49ers sit tied atop the NFC with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. In an effort to forget the 17-19 loss against Cleveland, the team will face off against the Minnesota Vikings on October 24. Prior to the week 7 contest, the San Francisco-based franchise updated their injury report, which contained a less promising update about their key players.
49ers get crucial injury updates regarding key players ahead of Week 7
San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey suffered an oblique/rib injury during the 49ers’ Week 6 road loss and underwent an MRI during the week. He missed practice on both Thursday and Friday. The team’s head coach, Kyle Shanahan, didn’t provide complete insight about his injury but signaled toward his potential comeback against Minnesota via Vikings.com.
Besides him, left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) also couldn’t participate in the practice session for a second consecutive day. Guard Aaron Banks (ankle) and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring) didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice but got updated with limited participants on Friday.
Cornerback Isaiah Oliver (knee) had limited participation and defensive back George Odum (quadriceps) had full participation on both days.
San Francisco 49ers suffer major setback with their first loss vs. Browns
San Francisco had won 15 regular-season games in a row before entering the match against the Browns. However, little did they know that they would lose the record for the “unbeaten” title to a less promising team. Multiple factors have contributed to such an embarrassing loss.
McCaffrey and Samuel had been ruled out due to injuries. Williams resumed play after facing an injury setback but he couldn’t bounce back strongly. The offense had six punts along with six three-and outs in the absence of these key troops. Even their quarterback Brock Purdy failed to uplift the O-line and completed just 44.4 percent of throws for 125 yards while recording one touchdown and one interception.
However, the 49ers’ defensive weapon showcased a good performance but that also fell short of expectations. Besides that, the franchise also had to digest a total of 12 penalties for 105 yards.
