In an intense sport like tennis, youth is believed to play a major role in becoming successful. The current generation of tennis is skyrocketing and carving its spot in the world of tennis. However, the ‘older’ generation of tennis legends who have made their indelible mark in this sport are unwilling to leave as well. Pioneering this movement is 43-year-old GOAT Venus Williams.

The American legend Venus Williams is the oldest active tennis pro right now, and her fervent determination isn’t letting her stop anytime soon. After 7 Grand Slams and 49 WTA singles titles, she continues to fight for more at the age of 43. Even though she might have been in a slump for a few years now, that might be coming to an end.

Venus Williams defeats Veronika Kudermetova

The 2023 season has been rather inconsistent for Queen V due to back-to-back injuries. However, she never hinted anything about her retirement so her fans knew that she would be back. Especially after her most recent training session in the Rafael Nadal Academy, the whole community knew that she was stepping back stronger.

This Canadian Open, Queen V was up against the Russian star Veronika Kudermetova who is currently ranked world number 16. The match started with an ace by Venus, and while her opponent was also able to break several serves, it wasn’t enough. Her well-constructed winners were a testament to her tennis finesse.

Venus Williams took the win in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) and moved on to the next round. Since 2019, this is her first win against a top 20 ranked player and her performance showed that Queen V will remain on the court for a long time. After taking the match point, she walked to the net with a magical content smile on her face because the win meant so much to her.

When was the last time Venus Williams defeated a top-20-ranked opponent?

Venus Williams had lost the last 10 matches against the top 20 players until this particular match. The last time she took the win against a top-ranked player was in the Cincinnati Open back in 2019.  Queen V was against the then 5th-ranked former Dutch star Kiki Bertens.
