After accomplishing a stellar college career at Ohio State, Anthony Richardson’s landing in the NFL was eye-catching and noteworthy enough. Seeing his promising look and blend of athletic prowess, the Indianapolis Colts did not hesitate to announce the rookie player as their starter of the season.
With his stunning start in his debut season, he not only gained the trust of his team but also the league’s legend Aaron Rodgers. Unfortunately, his tenure with the Colts recently met a terrible setback, leading the Colts to fill his shoes with Kellen Mond.
Kellen Mond joins Colts following Anthony Richardson’s injury
Following a tackle by Titans linebacker Harold Landry III in the second quarter of the Colts’ victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Richardson suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder. Later, Colts head coach Shane Steichen revealed that the rookie quarterback Richardson had sprained his AC joint, although he left open the possibility of surgery or a period on injured reserve for the quarterback.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the rookie quarterback’s return to the field, Gardner Minshew, the Colts’ backup quarterback, will start the next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Tom Pelissero, the Colts were unable to rely on Minshew alone and instead worked out a number of quarterbacks.
Kellen Mond, who last played for the Cleveland Browns, apparently met the Colts’ requirements and has been signed to the practice squad. Additionally, the quarterback’s physical is currently pending, according to NFL media. Prior to that, Mond played for the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings.
The Colts decided to add depth to their quarterback room with Kellen as he is one of three SEC quarterbacks with over 9,000 career passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards.
Rodgers predicts a bright future for Richardson
For a season-ending injury, Aaron Rodgers is already out of the season but the quarterback always remains connected with the play. During his appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on Tuesday, the New York Jets starter gave a nod to Anthony Richardson claiming him a big star for the Indy, as per On3.
“The young kid they got there, Richardson? He has got a chance to be really special”, Rodgers said.
A-Rod emphasized his tremendous athleticism, praising it in particular for the amount of skill the young Colts star had displayed in handling the football and ball security.
“It’s incredible. It really is. You know, ball security is job security and he has done an incredible job of that. He has been doing a fantastic job of taking care of the football, not, like, having plays where, ‘Oh, that should’ve been picked’ or ‘That was a bad read’. I don’t feel like, in the few times I’ve seen him on the RedZone channel when the games have been on, he hasn’t been making bad decisions.”
Anthony only had the opportunity to play in four games, but in that short time, he amassed 577 yards, three touchdowns, and just one interception. This is reason enough to predict a great future for Anthony, and the four-time MVP did not hold back in describing the Colts youngster as a tough and humble young man.
“Just, again, I don’t know him at all, but, from afar, I do appreciate he seems to be a really humble kid. He’s got his head screwed on the right way. He’s a tough kid.”
However, Anthony Richardson already suffered an injury in two of his games. Aaron Rodgers advised him to make a few reminders on when to slack down in order to safeguard his job and himself.
